Indian Air Force New Ensign

New Indian Air Force Ensign Unveiled on 91st Air Force Day 2023

In the historical context, the Royal Indian Air Force (RIAF) Ensign originally featured the Union Jack in the upper left canton and the RIAF roundel in Red, White, and Blue on the fly side. After India gained independence, the IAF ensign was redesigned by replacing the Union Jack with the Indian tricolor and the RAF roundels with the IAF tricolor roundel in the lower right canton.

A new IAF flag has been designed to better reflect the values and identity of the Indian Air Force. The updated design includes the Air Force Crest in the top right corner, near the fly side. This change highlights the IAF’s commitment to its core principles and strong identity.

India Air Force Crest

The Indian Air Force (IAF) Crest has the Ashoka lion on top with the words “सत्यमेव जयते” below it. Under this, a Himalayan eagle with open wings shows the strength and fighting spirit of the IAF. Around the eagle is a light blue ring with the words “भारतीय वायु सेना”, meaning Indian Air Force. The crest stands for the pride, courage, and identity of the IAF.

Indian Air Force Motto

The motto of the Indian Air Force (IAF) is “नभः स्पृशं दीप्तम्” (Nabhaḥ Sparśaṁ Dīptam). It is inscribed below the Himalayan eagle in golden Devanagari script. This motto is derived from verse 24, Chapter 11 of the Bhagavad Gita. It translates to “Radiant Thou Touchest Heaven” or, in other words, “Touching the sky with Glory”. It reflects the IAF’s aspiration to reach new heights of excellence and achieve glory in the skies.
