Uttarakhand is known for its stunning natural beauty, with snow-capped Himalayas, lush forests, and picturesque rivers. It is also home to a rich cultural heritage, with diverse traditions, languages, and festivals. The state is a popular destination for tourists from all over India and the world.

Uttarakhand Foundation Day is a time to celebrate the state’s unique identity and its people. It is also a time to reflect on the progress that has been made since the state’s formation and to look forward to the future.

History of Formation of Uttarakhand

The formation of Uttarakhand as a separate state from Uttar Pradesh can be traced back to the 1930s when the demand for a separate hill state gained momentum. This demand was fueled by several factors, including:

  • The cultural and linguistic distinctness of the hill region: The hill region of Uttar Pradesh is home to several different ethnic groups with their own unique cultures and languages. This distinctness from the plains of Uttar Pradesh made the hill region feel marginalized and neglected by the state government.
  • The economic backwardness of the hill region: The hill region of Uttar Pradesh is one of the most economically backward regions in India. This backwardness was attributed to the lack of investment in infrastructure, education, and healthcare.
  • The desire for greater self-governance: The people of the hill region felt that they could govern themselves better if they had their separate state. This would allow them to address their unique needs and priorities without interference from the state government in Lucknow.

Post Independence

The demand for a separate hill state gained momentum in the 1950s and 1960s, but it was not until the 1990s that the movement gained traction. In 1994, the Uttarakhand Kranti Dal (Uttarakhand Revolutionary Party) was formed, and it quickly became the leading force behind the statehood movement.

In 1998, the Uttar Pradesh Reorganisation Bill was introduced in the Indian Parliament. The bill proposed the creation of a new state of Uttaranchal, which would be carved out of the northern mountainous region of Uttar Pradesh. The bill was passed by the Lok Sabha (lower house of Parliament) in August 1998. But it was defeated in the Rajya Sabha (upper house of Parliament) in December 1998.

New Bill to form Uttrakhand

The defeat of the bill did not deter the statehood movement. In 2000, the Uttar Pradesh Reorganisation Bill was reintroduced in Parliament, and this time it was passed by both houses. On November 9, 2000, Uttaranchal was officially formed as a separate state.

The name of the state was changed to Uttarakhand in 2007 to reflect the region’s cultural and linguistic heritage.

The formation of Uttarakhand was a landmark event in the history of India. It was the culmination of decades of struggle for self-determination by the people of the hill region. The state has made significant progress since its formation, but there are still many challenges that need to be addressed.

Challenges facing Uttarakhand today

  • Poverty and unemployment: Uttarakhand is one of the poorest states in India. Poverty and unemployment are widespread, especially in rural areas.
  • Infrastructure: The state’s infrastructure is underdeveloped. This is a major obstacle to economic development.
  • Environmental degradation: The state is facing the twin challenges of deforestation and climate change. These challenges are putting a strain on the state’s natural resources.

Despite these challenges, Uttarakhand is a beautiful and resilient state with a rich cultural heritage. The state has the potential to become a prosperous and sustainable destination for tourism, agriculture, and manufacturing.
