About PC Mahalanobis
Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis was an Indian statistician and economist who is widely regarded as the father of modern statistics in India. He was born on June 29, 1893, in Calcutta, British India (now Kolkata).
Mahalanobis studied physics at Presidency College, Calcutta, and then went on to study mathematics and statistics at Cambridge University, England. After graduating from Cambridge, he returned to India and joined the Indian Civil Service.
Mahalanobis was a recipient of numerous awards and honors, including the Padma Vibhushan, India’s second-highest civilian award. He was also elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of London, one of the highest honors in the field of science.
Mahalanobis’s most notable contributions
- In 1928, Mahalanobis founded the Indian Statistical Institute (ISI) in Calcutta. The ISI quickly became one of the leading statistical institutions in the world. Mahalanobis served as its director until he died in 1972.
- Mahalanobis made significant contributions to the development of statistical theory and methods.
