National Education Day: 11 November

  • In India, the National Education Day is celebrated on 11 November every year to commemorate the birth anniversary of Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, the first education minister of independent India.
  • The day was announced by the Ministry of Human Resource Development on 11 September 2008.
  • Maulana Abul Kalam Azad served as education minister from 15 August 1947 to 2 February 1958.

Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has approved the declaration of November 15 as Janjatiya Gaurav Divas.

  • 15 November has been chosen as this date marks the birth anniversary of Sri Birsa Munda who is revered as Bhagwan (God) by tribal communities across the country.
  • The Janjatiya Gaurav Divas is dedicated to the brave tribal freedom fighters and their sacrificed for the country.
  • The day will be celebrated every year from now on to recognize the efforts of the tribals for preservation of cultural heritage and promotion of Indian values of valour, hospitality and national pride.

International News

United States of America (USA) has joined the International Solar Alliance (ISA) as a member country on November 10, 2021

  • U.S is now the 101st country to sign the framework agreement of the ISA.
  • The framework agreement was formally signed by John Kerry, the U.S. Special Presidential Envoy for Climate, at the COP26 climate summit in Glasgow.

National News

India has launched E-Amrit portal on electric vehicles (EVs) at the ongoing COP26 Summit
in Glasgow on November 10, 2021

  • The web portal has been developed by NITI Aayog with support from UK government.
  • E-Amrit is one-stop destination to provide all information regarding electric vehicles.
  • The website will provide details related to burst myths around the adoption of EVs, as well as their purchase, investment opportunities, policies, subsidies, among other things to raise awareness about EVs and sensitise consumers on the benefits of switching to electric mobility.

COP26 All Highlights

Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi was on five-day official visit to Italy, the city-state of
Vatican, and the United Kingdom to attend the G20 Summit in Rome and Conference of
Parties (COP26) in Glasgow.
During the COP26 Summit, Prime Minister Modi announced five “amrit tatva” or five
commitments. These include:
1. Increase the non-fossil fuel based energy capacity of the country to 500 GW by 2030.
2. Meet 50% of the country’s energy requirements through renewable energy sources by 2030.
3. Reduce 1 billion tonnes of carbon emissions from the total projected emissions by 2030.
4. Bring down the carbon intensity of the economy by more than 45 per cent by 2030.
5. India would become carbon neutral and achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2070.

  • India and the United Kingdom have jointly launched Green Grids Initiative One Sun One
  • World One Grid’ (GGI-OSOWOG) during the World Leaders’ Summit of COP26 on November 02, 2021.
  • Steering Committee of GGI-OSOWOG have five members, including India, the UK, the US, Australia and France.
  • The initiative has been backed by more than 80 Member States of the International Solar Alliance (ISA).
  • Sir David Attenborough has been named as the “People’s Advocate” of the UN Climate
  • Change Conference (COP26), which is scheduled to be held in Glasgow in November 2021, under the Chairmanship of United Kingdom..
  • Indian-origin UK Minister Alok Sharma has been appointed as the new President of the 2020 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26).

Appointment

Central Government has appointed K V Kamath as chairperson of the National Bank for Financing Infrastructure and Development (NaBFID).

  • Kamath is a well-known banker in India and is the first head of the New Development Bank (NDB).
  • NaBFID is a newly set up development financial institution (DFIs) in India. It has been set up for infrastructure financing as per the National Bank for Financing Infrastructure and Development (NaBFID) Act 2021.
  • The authorized share capital of the NaBFID is Rs one lakh crore.
  • The initial paid-up capital of NaBFID is Rs 20,000 crore.
  • The headquarters of NaBFID is in Mumbai.

Sheel Vardhan Singh appointed CISF chief, Atul Karwal to head NDRF

  • Sheel Vardhan Singh, a 1986 batch Indian Police Service officer of Bihar cadre, is currently Special Director in the Intelligence Bureau.
  • Atul Karwal is presently working as Director, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy, Hyderabad.

Vice Admiral R Hari Kumar has been named as the next Chief of the Naval Staff by the
Government of India.

  • He is presently posted as Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief Western Naval Command.
  • Kumar will take on the new role with effect from November 30, 2021.
  • He will replace the incumbent Chief of the Naval Staff, Admiral Karambir Singh, who will complete his tenure on November 30, 2021.

Morinari Watanabe from Japan has been re-elected as the president of the International
Gymnastics Federation (FIG) for a period of three year on November 06, 2021.

  • He was first elected as the president of FIG in 2016 for a four-year term beginning January 2017.
  • His term was then extended by one year.
  • Watanabe will now continue to hold the position till 2024.

Bandhan Bank has roped in Indian singer, actor, and composer, Zubeen Garg as its brand

Indian-American banker C.S. Venkatakrishnan (known as Venkat) has been appointed as the group chief executive (CEO) of the British multinational bank Barclays on November 01, 2021

  • He replaces Jes Staley, who stepped down recently, after serving the post since 2015.
  • Venkat was born in Mysore, Karnataka.
  • He joined Barclays in 2016 as chief risk officer and in October 2020 became the head of global markets and co-president of BBPLC.

Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved the reappointment of
Shaktikanta Das as the Governor of Reserve Bank of India ( RBI) for a further period of three years with effect from December 10, 2021.

  • Mr. Das assumed the charge as the 25th governor of RBI on December 12, 2018 for three years.
  • Before his appointment at RBI, Das served as a member of the 15th Finance Commission.
  • Mr. Das is a 1980 batch Indian Administrative Services (IAS) officer from Tamil Nadu cadre.

Centre has appointed former Supreme Court Judge Justice Ashok Bhushan as the
new Chairperson of the National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT), for a period of
four years or until he attains the age of 70 years, whichever is the earliest

  • Justice Bhushan was the former Chief Justice of Kerala High Court.
  • NCLAT was formed by the government under Section 410 of the Companies Act, 2013.
  • Apart from this, Justice Ramalingam Sudhakar has been appointed as the new President of quasi-judicial body, National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) for five years or till he attains the age of 67 years.
  • Justice Sudhakar was the former Chief Justice of Manipur High Court.

Reserve Bank of India has approved the appointment of Baldev Prakash as Managing
Director and CEO of J&K Bank for a period of three years from the date of taking charge or
April 10, 2022, whichever is earlier

  • The actual date of appointment of Baldev Prakash as MD & CEO of J&K Bank will be
  • announced by the bank subsequently.
  • Rajesh Kumar Chhibber is the present Chairman and Managing Director of J&K Bank. He
  • assumed charge of the bank in June 2019.
  • The government of Jammu & Kashmir holds a majority shareholding of 68.18% in the bank.
  • The headquarters of J&K Bank is located in Srinagar.

Former captain Rahul Dravid has been appointed as the head coach of the Indian men’s
cricket team by the BCCI.

  • The former right-handed batsman has been appointed for a period of two years till the 2023 50-over World Cup.
  • Dravid will begin his tenure as full-time coach from the T20I series against New Zealand starting November 17, 2021 in Jaipur.

Financial services firm KMPG has announced the appointment of senior partner Yezdi
Nagporewalla as the new chief executive officer (CEO) for the India division.

  • Nagporewalla has been appointed as the new CEO of KPMG India for a four-year term with effect from February 7, 2022 till December 31, 2026.
  • Nagporewalla will replace current Chairman and CEO, Arun M. Kumar, who completes his five-year term on February 6, 2022.
  • With the new appointment, KPMG India has split the roles of Chairman and CEO. The new Chairman will be named over the next few months.

Invest India, a young startup within the Government of India, has been unanimously elected as the President of the World Association of Investment Promotion Agencies
(WAIPA) for 2021-2023

  • Invest India is the National Investment Promotion and Facilitation Agency to help investors

  • The members of the Steering Committee of WAIPA for 2021-23 includes:

  • Two Vice Presidents – Egypt and Switzerland

Indian-origin Canadian politician Anita Anand has been appointed as the new Defence
Minister of the country on October 26, 2021 in a Cabinet reshuffle by Prime Minister Justin
Trudeau.

  • She is only the second woman to be appointed as Canada’s National Defence Minister, after Kim Campbell in the 1990s.
  • The 54-year-old Anita Anand replaces long-time Indian-origin Defence Minister Harjit Sajjan.

Shavkat Mirziyoyev, the incumbent President of Uzbekistan has been re-elected for
a second five-year term, after he won with landslide victory in 2021 Presidential election
held on October 24, 2021.

  • The 64-year -old won 80.1% of the total vote.
  • Mirziyoyev took the office of President in 2016 following the death of longtime President Islam Karimov,
  • Prior to being appointed as the President, Mirziyoyev served as the Prime Minister of Uzbekistan from 2003 to 2016.

Realme has appointed international cricketer KL Rahul as its brand ambassador.

  • Realme is a Chinese smartphone brand and Rahul will help grow its sale in India.
  • Realme was established in 2018 by founder Sky Li and Madhav Sheth in India.

German sportswear brand Adidas has roped in Bollywood actress Deepika
Padukone as global ambassador for women sports.

  • Deepika will represent adidas women globally.
  • She joins the elite list of female brand ambassadors of Adidas in India, including Mirabai
  • Chanu; boxers Lovlina Borgohain, Nikhat Zareen and Simranjeet Kaur; sprinter Hima Das, and squash player Dipika Pallikal.

Chinese Smartphone maker OnePlus has announced the appointment of Navnit Nakra as
its India CEO and Head of OnePlus India region operations.


The renowned film director, producer, and writer, Imtiaz Ali has been roped in as
the ambassador of the Russian Film Festival in India.
