5 Indian youths win 2023 International Young Eco-Hero Awards

Seventeen outstanding teenage environmental activists, including five from India, have been honored with the esteemed 2023 International Young Eco-Hero Awards. Their exceptional initiatives addressing pressing environmental issues have earned them recognition from the US-based non-profit organization “Action For Nature.”

Eiha Dixit from Meerut, Manya Harsha from Bengaluru, Nirvaan Somany and Mannat Kaur from New Delhi, and Karnav Rastogi from Mumbai have been hailed as exemplary young eco-warriors.

A Glimpse into the International Young Eco-Hero Awards

The International Young Eco-Hero Awards program applauds and inspires children and teens aged 8 to 16 who have taken decisive actions to tackle crucial environmental challenges. These honorees are the emerging eco-conscious generation that has shown the drive to solve intricate environmental problems. The International Young Eco-Hero Award recipients are meticulously selected by an independent panel of judges, including experts in environmental science, biology, and education. Over the past two decades, “Action For Nature” has celebrated 339 Eco-Heroes from 27 countries and 32 US states.

  1. Eiha Dixit: A Green Pioneer from Childhood

Eiha Dixit, this year’s first-place winner, started nurturing saplings at the tender age of 4. Through the Green Eiha Smile Foundation, she and a group of volunteers have planted over 20,000 saplings, creating green havens in her city. She has also established a plant bank at her home, fostering community sharing of plants.

  1. Manya Harsha: The Little Environmentalist with a Big Vision

Securing second place in the 8-12-year-old category, Manya Harsha endeavors to raise environmental awareness among peers. Through her books, blog, and YouTube channel, “The Little Environmentalist,” she encourages fellow youngsters to make impactful changes. Her activities include walkathons, sapling planting, and clean-up campaigns, all contributing to a sustainable lifestyle.

  1. Nirvaan Somany: Denim and Dignity for the Homeless

In the 13-16-year-old category’s second place, Nirvaan Somany founded “Project Jeans” to address the environmental impact of discarded denim while aiding the less privileged. His innovative approach repurposes used jeans into washable, insulating sleeping bags for the homeless, reducing waste and providing protection against harsh weather.

  1. Mannat Kaur: Innovative Water Conservation Advocate

Securing third place in the 13-16-year-old category, Mannat Kaur addresses water scarcity and carbon emissions tied to freshwater supply and wastewater treatment. Her inventive system collects, filters, and reuses household greywater for non-potable uses, conserving drinking water and potentially benefiting entire communities.

  1. Karnav Rastogi: Spreading Change Through Words

Karnav Rastogi, a 13-year-old honorable mention recipient, is committed to reducing plastic waste and tackling climate change. His books, distributed in thousands of copies, educate young minds about these issues, inspiring action and change.
