Arithmetic Questions for IBPS
These questions are designed as per the latest exam pattern and syllabus.
Q1. What is the speed of the boat in still water if a man rows 30 km downstream in 3 hours and returns upstream in 5 hours?
a) 6.5 km/h
b) 7.5 km/h
c) 8 km/h
d) 9 km/h
e) None of these
Correct Answer: b) 7.5 km/h
Solution:
Downstream speed = 30 ÷ 3 = 10 km/h
Upstream speed = 30 ÷ 5 = 6 km/h
Speed in still water = (10 + 6)/2 = 8 km/h
Q2. A can do a work in 18 days. B is 50% more efficient than A. In how many days can they complete the work together?
a) 10.8 days
b) 7.2 days
c) 8 days
d) 9 days
e) None
Correct Answer: b) 7.2 days
Solution:
B’s efficiency = 1.5 × A = 1.5 × (1/18) = 1/12
Together = 1/18 + 1/12 = (2 + 3)/36 = 5/36
Time = 36/5 = 7.2 days
Q3. The average of five consecutive odd numbers is 49. What is the largest number?
a) 53
b) 55
c) 51
d) 57
e) None
Correct Answer: a) 53
Solution:
Let the numbers be: x-4, x-2, x, x+2, x+4
Average = x = 49 → x = 49
Largest = x + 4 = 53
Q4. A sum amounts to Rs. 6,600 at 10% per annum for 2 years (Simple Interest). What is the principal?
a) Rs. 5,000
b) Rs. 6,000
c) Rs. 5,500
d) Rs. 6,200
e) None
Correct Answer: c) Rs. 5,500
Solution:
SI = P × R × T / 100 = P × 10 × 2 / 100 = 0.2P
Amount = P + SI = P + 0.2P = 1.2P = 6,600
P = 6,600 / 1.2 = Rs. 5,500
Q5. Two trains of equal length cross a pole in 6 and 8 seconds respectively. How long will they take to cross each other when moving in opposite directions?
a) 6.86 sec
b) 7.11 sec
c) 7.2 sec
d) 7.8 sec
e) None
Correct Answer: c) 7.2 sec
Solution:
Let length = L.
Speed1 = L/6, Speed2 = L/8 → Relative speed = L/6 + L/8 = 7L/24
Time = 2L ÷ (7L/24) = (2 × 24)/7 = 48/7 = 6.86 sec
Q6. A sum becomes Rs. 8,820 in 2 years and Rs. 9,261 in 3 years at compound interest. What is the rate per annum?
a) 5%
b) 6%
c) 4.5%
d) 7%
e) None
Correct Answer: b) 5%
Solution:
CI for 1 year = 9261 – 8820 = 441
Rate = (441/8820) × 100 = 5%
Q10. The current population is 1,05,000 and increases at 5% annually. What was the population 2 years ago?
a) 95,238
b) 98,000
c) 96,200
d) 94,850
e) None
Correct Answer: a) 95,238
Solution:
Population = P × (1.05)² = 1,05,000
P = 1,05,000 / (1.1025) ≈ 95,238
Q7. The perimeter of a rectangle is 96 cm, and the ratio of length to breadth is 5:3. What is the area?
a) 720 cm²
b) 648 cm²
c) 750 cm²
d) 675 cm²
e) None
Correct Answer: a) 720 cm²
Solution:
Let length = 5x, breadth = 3x
2(5x + 3x) = 96 → x = 6
Length = 30, Breadth = 18 → Area = 30 × 24 = 720 cm²
Q8. A shopkeeper marks an article 40% above cost and offers 25% discount. Find profit/loss % if CP is Rs. 800.
a) 5% profit
b) 5% loss
c) 10% profit
d) No profit no loss
e) None
Correct Answer: a) 5% profit
Solution:
MP = 800 + 40% = 1,120
SP = 1,120 – 25% = 840
Profit = 840 – 800 = 40 → (40/800) × 100 = 5%
Q9. Incomes of A and B are in ratio 3:4; expenditures in 4:5. If A saves Rs. 4,000 and B saves Rs. 5,000, find B’s income.
a) Rs. 20,000
b) Rs. 24,000
c) Rs. 28,000
d) Rs. 32,000
e) None
Correct Answer: b) Rs. 24,000
Solution:
Let income of A = 3x, B = 4x
Expenditure of A = 3x – 4000 = 4y
Expenditure of B = 4x – 5000 = 5y
Solve:
3x – 4000 = 4y & 4x – 5000 = 5y
From these, x = 6,000 → B’s income = 4 × 6,000 = Rs. 24,000
