International Men’s Day 2024, Its History and Significance

International Men’s Day 2024

On November 19, the world observes International Men’s Day, a dedicated occasion focusing on men’s health, fostering positive gender relations, showcasing male role models, and advocating for constructive expressions of masculinity. Initially celebrated in February, the significance of this day has grown over the years.

History of International Men’s Day

Soviet System Disparity

In 1968, American journalist John P. Harris highlighted an imbalance in the Soviet system. While International Women’s Day was celebrated for female workers, there was no equivalent acknowledgment for men, exposing a flaw in the communist structure.

Early Initiatives in the 1990s

Director of the Missouri Center for Men’s Studies, Thomas Oaster, spearheaded small-scale International Men’s Day events in the early 1990s in the U.S., Australia, and Malta during February. Despite initial success, dwindling attendance led to a hiatus in 1995, with Malta being the lone advocate.

Resurgence in Trinidad and Tobago

In 1999, Jerome Teelucksingh from the University of the West Indies revived International Men’s Day in Trinidad and Tobago. Selecting November 19, Teelucksingh aimed to celebrate men without children, young boys, and teenagers. The day honors positive male role models and emphasizes men’s physical and mental well-being.
