Upgrading 21 new Greenfield Airports to Meet Evolving Needs

Perpetual Evolution of Airport Infrastructure: Airports Authority of India’s Endeavor

The Airports Authority of India (AAI) and Airport Operators continually engage in the expansion and enhancement of airports. This perpetual process hinges on operational necessities, surging traffic, market demand, and economic viability. The partnership between AAI and stakeholders has committed a substantial capital of over Rs. 98,000 crore, with AAI’s contribution amounting to approximately Rs. 25,000 crore between 2019 and 2024. This investment aims to not only upgrade and modernize existing brownfield airports but also establish Greenfield Airports, catering to the ever-growing demands of aviation.

Embarking on a Nationwide Transformation of Airports

Catering to Demand, Elevating Infrastructure

AAI is currently spearheading the development and expansion of numerous airports across the country. From the serene Andaman & Nicobar Islands to the bustling landscapes of Uttar Pradesh, these projects span various strategic locations. This comprehensive initiative encompasses diverse improvements such as terminal expansions, state-of-the-art ATC towers, runway extensions, apron enhancements, parking bay augmentations, and more. The objective is to craft contemporary aviation hubs that align with international benchmarks for efficiency and functionality.

Policy for Aspiring Aviation Horizons: Greenfield Airports

Embracing Novel Aviation Ventures

To usher in fresh horizons in aviation, the Indian Government introduced the Greenfield Airports (GFA) Policy in 2008. This policy encourages developers, including state governments, to scout suitable locations and conduct pre-feasibility studies for new airport projects. The Central Government evaluates proposals, granting site clearance and in-principle approval for viable projects. The nation has thus far endorsed in-principle approval for 21 Greenfield airport proposals, with 12 successfully operationalized.

Boosting Local Connectivity: UDAN Scheme

Democratizing Air Travel

In a bid to amplify regional air connectivity, the Ministry of Civil Aviation initiated the Regional Connectivity Scheme (RCS) – UDAN (UdeDeshkaAamNagarik) in October 2016. The initiative aspires to make air travel accessible and affordable for a wider spectrum of citizens.

Attaining Global Excellence

Conforming to International Norms

Airports’ elevation to meet global standards specified by bodies like the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) and International Air Transport Association (IATA) is a key mission for AAI and Airport Operators. Diverse considerations, spanning commercial viability, traveler requisites, land feasibility, and airline preferences, inform these enhancements. The international status of an airport hinges on factors including passenger potential, airline demand for international operations, bilateral air services agreements, and the provisioning of essential facilities.

Concluding Remarks

The persistent expansion and evolution of India’s airport infrastructure exemplify the nation’s dedication to fostering a robust aviation framework. These endeavors are not solely driven by the burgeoning demand for air travel but also cement India’s position as a formidable contender in the global aviation landscape. This comprehensive information was relayed by Minister of State in the Ministry of Civil Aviation, Gen. (Dr) V. K. Singh (Retd), in response to an inquiry in the Lok Sabha.
