SOS Enfants en Detresses started the World Day of War Orphans to shine a light on the lives of kids who’ve been through the tough times of war. But it’s not just about talking; it’s a day that pushes us to do something to make these kids’ futures better.

When we check out the numbers from UNICEF, it gets real. Wars used to hit about half of the people who suffered, and that number kept going up until 2001. After that, it’s been slowly getting better, but we still have work to do. World War II was a big change – back then, about two-thirds of the people hurt were regular folks, not soldiers. By the end of the 1980s, it got even worse, with 9 out of 10 victims being civilians.

The Numbers Game

Let’s break down the numbers: in 1990, there were 146 million victims of war. Jump to 1995, and it went up to 151 million. The early 2000s hit a high at 155 million victims, but by 2015, it dropped to 140 million. These numbers tell us that people all around the world have been hit hard by war, especially the kids who end up with no family.

Significance of World Day of War Orphans

According to information provided by UNICEF, during conflicts in the 18th, 19th, and early 20th centuries, approximately half of the casualties were civilians, and this number steadily increased until 2001. Since that year, there has been a gradual decline in the number of civilian casualties, decreasing at a rate of 0.7% per year.

In World War II, nearly two-thirds of the victims were civilians, and by the end of the 1980s, this figure had risen to 90%.
