The term “tsunami” originates from Japanese, combining “tsu” (harbor) and “nami” (wave). Tsunamis are famous for their massive ocean waves.

Formation and Characteristics

Landslides and Tsunamis

Coastal landslides can shift significant volumes of water into the sea, prompting the creation of tsunamis. Similarly, submarine landslides beneath the ocean can result in tsunami generation.

Volcanic Eruptions as Tsunami Sources

Though rare, violent volcanic eruptions can displace substantial water volumes, producing highly destructive tsunami waves. The historical example of the 1883 Krakatoa eruption in Indonesia highlights this phenomenon.

Extraterrestrial Collisions and Tsunamis
