Success Story of Ankit Kumar – Qualified SSC CGL 2017

Read the success story of Ankit, who qualified for the SSC CGL exam with AIR 32. With proper time management tricks and strategy, he cracked the exam and now works as Assistant Section Officer in the Ministry of External Affairs.

1. Here’s His Inspiring Journey – Success Story of Ankit

My name is Ankit Kumar. I am from Rahsa East, Vaishali district of Bihar. I have done my B. Sc. (Physics) Hons. from Bhimrao Ambedkar Bihar University, Muzaffarpur. I have qualified the SSC CGL Exam 2017 with AIR 32, and have been appointed as Assistant Section Officer in the Ministry of External Affairs.

2. My Section-wise Preparation Strategy

2.1 Quant Section Preparation Strategy

I used to solve 100+ questions from Previous Years’ question papers daily and took weekly mock tests. For basic concepts, I went through Quantum CAT (by Sarvesh Kumar Verma) and particularly liked the way of instruction in the book, to approach any question. From these sources, I noted difficult questions and the different methods/tricks to solve them. This note helped me in revision just before the mains exam. Besides these, a few YouTube channels helped me, especially in Advance Maths.

2.2 Reasoning Section Preparation Strategy

Practicing previous years’ questions is sufficient. In my opinion, you don’t need any special books. If you don’t know how to solve some kind of questions, taking help from FB group/youtube will suffice.

2.3 English Section Preparation Strategy

Note down all the Vocabulary, Idioms and Phrases, phrasal verbs, One Words Substitutions, etc, from any part of the question paper, which are new to you or you forget frequently; revise this note multiple times before the exam.

You should revise the grammar rules to avoid mistakes in Common Errors, Sentence Improvement, sentence completion, etc. If your Comprehension section is weak, do read the English Newspaper daily. It helps tremendously in the long run.

I followed the advice of my seniors sincerely and started reading the newspaper ‘Times of India’, as I had heard that English Newspaper is almost a panacea for SSC English preparation.

3. What Should Be Your Approach to SSC CGL Exam?

Time management is very important for this exam. In CGL Tier-1 Exam, you have to attempt 100 MCQs (Reasoning, Quantitative Aptitude, English & General Awareness) in 60 min. Attempting paper in GA, English, Reasoning, and Quant – Order will help you give your maximum attempt and solve the whole paper in the stipulated time.

In CGL Tier-II Exam, you have to solve 100 Quant questions and 200 English Language and Comprehension questions in 120 min each. As you get 72 Sec per question in Quant, you should skip difficult questions for 2nd round attempt and do easier questions in 1st attempt and 1st hour, which boosts your confidence and overall more attempt.

You will have to follow a strategy to attempt English Language and Comprehension as well. At first, attempt spot the error, fill in the blanks, synonyms, antonyms, spelling/ detecting misspelled words, idioms & phrases, one-word substitution, improvement of sentences, active/ passive voice of verbs, conversion into direct/ indirect narration (Questions in the paper are jumbled). After attempting all the questions of these sections, attempt Cloze Test and then Comprehension passage, and at last Para Jumble. Following this approach will maximize your attempt in the limited time.

4. How Mock Tests play an important role?

Mock Tests play a crucial role in your selection; so you should take mock test papers regularly (without fail). Taking one mock test daily from the very beginning is strongly recommended considering its importance. You might get low marks in the beginning, still, you should continue taking mock tests.

This is just one part, the other being Analysis of the mock test paper. You need to figure out why some questions you couldn’t solve and resolve the issue behind it to make sure next time you don’t make the same mistake and do similar questions without fail. Oliveboard mock tests were a great help for me.

All the Best!
