IBPS PO Mains 2017 Exam Analysis

The Institute of Banking Personnel Selection (IBPS) Mains paper for the recruitment of probationary officers was conducted yesterday (26 November 2017). Here’s a complete IBPS PO Mains 2017 exam analysis for your reference.

The exam was for 200 marks and candidates had three hours to answer all questions. There were four sections in the Mains exam.

  • Reasoning (60 marks)
  • General/Economy/Banking Awareness (40 marks)
  • English Language (35 marks)
  • Data Analysis & Interpretation (35 marks)

There was a descriptive writing section (25 marks) that had one question on letter writing and one on essay writing.

IBPS PO Mains 2017 Exam Analysis – Overall & Section-Wise

The overall paper was of moderate to difficult level. The Reasoning section was difficult, Data analysis and Interpretation was moderate, English was moderate to difficult and General Economy and Banking Awareness section was moderate. There were quite few surprises with new types of questions.


The questions on critical reasoning, direction sense and analytical reasoning followed a new pattern. On the other hand, blood relations were coded. Coding decoding questions were again new type with alphabetic strings.

There were 8 questions from critical reasoning, 5 from coding decoding (new type), 4 from linear arrangement.

Overall, this section was tough and brought few surprises for the candidates.


This section again brought in new types of questions. All except Reading Comprehension had questions in new pattern. Cloze test and fill in the banks came as a combination of one pair or a group of pair of words.

There were 10 questions from RC, 7 from Cloze test, 4 from Synonym and Antonym, 3 each from Error Spotting and Para Jumbles.

Overall, this section was moderate to tough.

Data Analysis & Interpretation

Questions from Data sufficiency and Data comparison were of new type. Both had 5 questions each. There were new questions on Geometry, Polynomials and Algebra as well. Data Interpretation had 15 questions.

Overall, this section was of moderate level.

General Economy and Banking Awareness

There were 15 questions from banking awareness (current and static), 9 from economy and 8 from current affairs. There were questions around Dams, Headquarters, Dance forms, Capital etc. This section was of moderate level. IBPS PO Mains Exam Analysis

Thus, IBPS PO Mains 2017 brought in different new types of questions from each section. It would be interesting to know how candidates performed and tackled the surprises and what would be the cut offs for this year.
