International Day for the Elimination of Sexual Violence in Conflict 2024

International Day for the Elimination of Sexual Violence in Conflict 2024

Every year on June 19, we observe the International Day for the Elimination of Sexual Violence in Conflict. This day is about making people aware of the serious problem of sexual violence during wars and conflicts all around the world. It also focuses on finding ways to stop these terrible crimes. The United Nations declared June 19 as this special day in 2015, remembering the adoption of a resolution that condemned sexual violence as a tactic of war and something that makes it hard to build peace.

History of International Day for the Elimination of Sexual Violence in Conflict

Early Rules about War

In the past, when there was a war, people often didn’t talk about the bad things that happened, like sexual violence. In the American Civil War in 1863, there was a set of rules called the Lieber Code that said sexual assault is a wrong thing, and rape is a very serious crime. However, later on, they changed the rules, and the word ‘rape’ was removed. Instead, they talked about an attack on the ‘honor of the family.’ The idea of ‘honor’ came up again in the Fourth Geneva Convention of 1949, but this time, it mentioned that women needed protection, and ‘rape’ was back as an example of attacking the honor of women.

Red Cross Involvement

The International Committee of the Red Cross has always spoken out against the bad things that happen during wars. However, it wasn’t until the late 1990s that they started actively working on the issue of sexual violence during wars. There are rules called the second additional protocol of 1977 to the Geneva Convention that say it’s not okay to do bad things like “outrages against personal dignity, rape, enforced prostitution, and any form of indecent assault” at any time and any place, especially against people who are not part of the fighting.

More Problems Recently

In recent years, there has been an increase in crimes related to gender, especially against women. This day brings attention to the need to act quickly to help and protect women and girls. It also remembers and honors the people who have worked hard to stop these crimes.
