The theme for International Mother Language Day 2024 is “Multilingual Education- a Necessity to Transform Education.” This means promoting the use of multiple languages in education to improve learning. Significance of International Mother Language Day

History of International Mother Language Day

In 1999, UNESCO created International Mother Language Day, and the first celebration happened in 2000. This day has a special connection to the Bengali Language Movement, which fought to make Bengali the official language of Bangladesh. This movement started in the 1950s in East Pakistan and faced difficulties, leading to the recognition of February 21 as a day to remember those who sacrificed for their language.

Inspired by the Bengali Language Movement, the United Nations declared February 21 as International Mother Language Day. The goal is to protect languages from disappearing.
