What are Interpersonal Skills?
Interpersonal skills are also known as soft skills or people skills. These are essentially people-facing skills that help an individual deal with other people. It also helps in dealing with different kinds of situations.
Some of the most important interpersonal skills are as follows:
- Communication Skills
- Listening Skills
- Non-Verbal Communication
Let us look at each of them in detail here.
Communication skills are very essential in today’s world and more so in a public-facing role such as an administrative position. It is the process by which one can communicate clearly and effectively with others.
Listening skills are very important and without listening properly one cannot be a good communicator. It is also essential to understand what the other person is saying in order to understand their expectations.
It is an essential skill that needs to be developed in administrative jobs where there will be situations where one needs to listen to issues and problems of the general public.
Non-verbal communication refers to the body language, gestures, tone and eye contact of the person who is communicating with the other person. It gives away indications that whether you are really involved in the conversation or not.
It is necessary to pay attention to someone who is speaking to you or when you are speaking to someone else, as it signifies that you are interested in this conversation and trying to understand the situation.
Do not stare at the other person as may make them uncomfortable, also trying to avoid eye contact may indicate that either you are ignoring or trying to hide something.
Empathy is one of the essential types of interpersonal skills, it is the process of understanding and sharing the feeling of another person.
It can be a great opportunity to understand other people’s concerns and provide them comfort in form of assuring words.
Active listening will help understand what the other person is saying and therefore will be easier to understand and display empathy.
The statement that respect is earned is true in many ways. People around you will communicate more with you when you show respect to them and for their ideas.
This in turn will open them up to you for further communication and also help you earn respect in their eyes. Simple gestures like making eye contact while speaking, addressing someone by their first name, and valuing their suggestions will make them feel appreciated.
