National Consumer Rights Day 2023, History and Significance

National Consumer Rights Day 2023

Every year on December 24, India gets together to celebrate National Consumer Rights Day. This special day is all about recognizing and protecting your power as someone who buys and sells things. While countries in the West have already figured this out, India is still working on making sure everyone knows about their rights as consumers. With more and more people shopping online, it’s really important for you to know and use your rights properly.

History of National Consumer Rights Day 2023

The Consumer Protection Act of 1986

Back in 1986, India decided to take your rights seriously. They made a rule called the Consumer Protection Act to make sure you don’t get tricked into buying broken things or getting bad services.

Changing Times

As time went on, the way people in India shopped changed a lot. There was more competition between sellers, new ideas came up, and lots of people started shopping online. Because of all these changes, the old rules needed an update. So, in 2019, India made a new rule called the Consumer Protection Bill to give you even better protection.

CPA 2019: More Power for You

The new rule got the thumbs up from the President on August 9, 2019. Then, on July 20, 2020, the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food, and Public Distribution said, “Okay, it’s time for these new rules to start working.” This meant more protection for you when you buy things.

Other Helpful Rules

Besides the Consumer Protection Acts of 1986 and 2019, there’s another rule called the Right to Information Act. This one helps make sure the government is open about what it’s doing. All these rules together give you rights like the right to be safe, the right to know things, the right to choose, and the right to learn about being a smart shopper.

Special Days and Global Fun

Special Themes

Every year on this special day, there’s a different theme to think about. The last one was all about finding different ways to fix problems you might have when you buy things.

Around the World

People all over the world also think about your rights on a day called World Consumer Rights Day, every March 15. This started in 1983 because everyone wanted to make sure you’re treated fairly no matter where you live.

The End, but Not Really

So, on this first birthday of National Consumer Rights Day, let’s remember how important it is for you to know and use your rights. With these rules in place, India is making sure that shopping is fair and fun for everyone!
