Jhelum is one of the major rivers flowing through Jammu and Kashmir. It originates at Verinag and ends in the Pakistani province of Punjab. It is a tributary of the Chenab river and is around 725 km long. It is one of the five rivers of Punjab.
Chenab is another major river of Jammu and Kashmir. It originates in the Lahaul and Spiti districts of Himachal Pradesh and flows through the Jammu region of J&K before finally ending in the plains of the Pakistani province of Punjab and finally flowing into the Indus River.
Chenab is formed from the combination of two water bodies Chandra and Bhaga. In ancient time it was known as Chandrabhaga.
The Ravi river is a major river flowing in Jammu and Kashmir. The ancient name of Ravi river is Irawati. It is a major river in India and Pakistan and an integral part of the Indus Basin. It originates in the Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh.
Indus river is the longest river in the subcontinent. It is about 3500 km long and around 1500 km of the river flows through the UT of J&K. The area covered by the river in J&K is between Ladakh Range and Zanskar Range.
The Tawi river originates in the Kailash Kund Spring at Soej hills in Bhaderwah. It flows through Chennani and Udhampur and passes through Jammu before crossing Ranbir Singh Pora and entering Pakistan.
Chennani hydroelectric power project constructed on River Tawi is estimated to have a capacity to generate 23 MW of electricity.
