Sarojini Naidu

Early Life and Education

Sarojini Naidu was born on February 13, 1879, in Hyderabad. She was the daughter of Aghorenath Chattopadhyay, a Sanskrit scholar and politician, and Barada Sundari Devi, a poet and social reformer.

Naidu was a child prodigy and was fluent in several languages, including English, Hindi, Telugu, and Bengali. She began writing poetry at a young age and her work was published in several magazines and newspapers.

In 1895, Naidu traveled to England to study at King’s College London. She graduated with a degree in English literature in 1898.

Political Career

After returning to India, Naidu became involved in the Indian independence movement. She was a member of the Indian National Congress and actively participated in protests and demonstrations.

Naidu was a strong supporter of Mahatma Gandhi and his philosophy of non-violence. She was also a member of the All India Women’s Conference, an organization that advocated for women’s rights.

In 1925, Naidu became the first woman President of the Indian National Congress. She served in this position for one year.
