International Criminal Justice Day 2024

Every July 17, people around the world observe the World Day for International Justice. It goes by different names, like the Day of International Criminal Justice or International Justice Day. The purpose is to acknowledge and appreciate the system of international justice. This special day highlights the role of international courts in bringing justice to victims of war crimes and crimes against humanity. It also marks the day when countries worldwide agreed to follow the rules of the International Criminal Court (ICC).

History of International Criminal Justice Day

Throughout history, the world has seen many changes, new challenges, and wars. People did terrible things to each other, and the need for international justice became clear. The Nuremberg trials after World War II were a big step in creating a permanent international court. They prosecuted Nazi criminals for crimes against peace and humanity. Around the same time, the Tokyo Trial did the same for the leaders of Japan.

The Rome Statute: A Turning Point

On July 17, 1998, countries came together in Rome, Italy, to suggest a treaty for dealing with serious crimes internationally. This treaty, known as the Rome Statute, was adopted by 120 states. It led to the formation of the International Criminal Court (ICC) in 2002. The ICC is a permanent court that investigates and punishes people who are suspected of committing genocide, crimes against humanity, war crimes, and, since 2018, the crime of aggression. It steps in when national authorities can’t or won’t act, although it can’t replace national courts.

From Idea to Celebration

The idea of recognizing the day when the Rome Statute was adopted became official at a meeting in Kampala, Uganda, in 2010. Since then, June 17 has been celebrated as the World Day for International Justice.
