What is Water Conservation?

Water conservation is the practice of using water efficiently to reduce unnecessary usage. It refers to the development, control, and preservation of water resources, both groundwater and surface and the prevention of pollution.

Methods of Water Conservation

Technical methods of conserving water include the following –

  • Rainwater Harvesting
Rainwater harvesting is the procedure of collecting and gathering water from the rooftop. This traditional method is the most simple and effective way to conserve water. The conserved rainwater can be utilized for agricultural as well as domestic purposes. Rainwater harvesting can be done using methods like Conveyance, Catchment, and Storage.
  • Historical Water Bodies
Traditional water bodies that have been abandoned for quite some time can be reused as recharging points.
  • Ponds
Adequate steps need to be taken to avoid dumping sewage, garbage, and other wastes into the ponds, especially in the village areas. These ponds should be deepened with dragline machines.

Besides, each individual must adopt a few measures to conserve water.

  • Prevent pollution as it may lead to contamination of water
  • Use less water
  • Manage water properly
  • Stop the Greenhouse effect
  • Save rainwater

With many countries and parts of India suffering droughts whilst others wasting valuable water every now and then, it is evident that we adopt more efficient and fairer water management practices.

Importance of Water Conservation

Clean and fresh water is a limited resource. Whilst three-fourths of the Earth is covered in water, humans and other species can only consume saltwater after it has been desalinated. This is an expensive procedure. Water conservation is important and must be put into implementation right away. Here are three reasons why you need to do your best to conserve water –

  • The less water we use or waste, the less clean water will be contaminated. Sometimes, using too much water strains the sewage and septic system, which leads to contamination of groundwater, as dirty, untreated water seeps into the ground from the sewage system.
  • Dishwashers, washing machines, and other appliances that use water also use a considerable amount of energy. Water conservation reduces the use of energy and even helps save household expenditures. Most families pay to use water in their regions or cities. The less water you use, the less you need to pay every time.
  • From feeding animals to irrigating crops, water is vital to agriculture. We must conserve water to ensure that all types of crops can be grown. Besides, depleting water reserves means destroying the habitat of various species and even driving them to extinction. Several animal species become adjusted to living in specific types of water – water that is particularly saline or consists of chemicals, particularly deep water, water with a particular temperature, etc. Therefore, we need to conserve all forms of water for these species as well as for ourselves.
