The Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban, spearheaded by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, is actively promoting the ‘Swachh Diwali, Shubh Diwali’ campaign nationwide. Cities are actively engaging in environmentally responsible Diwali celebrations through various initiatives, such as the Swachh Diwali Signature campaign.

Cities participating in the campaign are committing to eco-conscious choices, including endorsing locally made products, contributing unused items to Resource Recovery and Recycling (RRR) Centres, and opting for eco-friendly alternatives to single-use plastic.

A noteworthy initiative comes from Assam, where a unique waste management plan has been devised to address the aftermath of Diwali. Traditionally, Assamese people illuminate earthen lamps on banana trees and leaves during Diwali. However, the stems of these banana trees become redundant the following day.

To combat post-Diwali waste, Assam has embraced the principle of 3Rs – Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle. The focus is on transforming waste into a valuable resource, particularly in the context of the banana trees used in traditional Diwali celebrations.

Banana Trees Repurposed for Elephant Fodder: Swachh Diwali Campaign

In a groundbreaking move, Assam plans to repurpose the leftover banana trees, stems, and leaves by providing them to national parks near urban areas. These parts will serve as fodder for elephants, aligning with the mission’s goal of sustainable waste management.

Waste Disposal in Areas without National Parks:

In regions where national parks are not in proximity, citizens are encouraged to cut the banana trees into smaller pieces. These pieces are then handed over to urban local bodies for proper disposal. Municipal staff play a pivotal role by directing the stems to either cow shelters or designated ‘waste to compost’ pits within urban centers.

Utilizing Existing Infrastructure for Waste Management:

Assam’s commitment to waste reduction is supported by existing infrastructure, including 104 central compost pits at various locations and over 6000 domestic composting pits. This robust system ensures that waste generated during Diwali festivities is effectively managed, contributing to the broader Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban objectives.
