Buddha Purnima 2024, Its History, Significance & How to Celebrate

Buddha Purnima 2024

Buddha Purnima, also called Buddha Jayanti, holds deep meaning for millions. But its date causes confusion. In India and Nepal it’s May 23. In Southeast Asia it’s May 19. This stems from two full moons in May, and differing interpretations of Buddhist and Hindu lunar calendars.

History of Buddha Purnima

Buddha Purnima celebrates the birth of Prince Siddhartha Gautama, a Nepali prince who became the Buddha, Buddhism’s revered founder (c. 563-483 B.C.). “Purnima” means “full moon” in Sanskrit, explaining the full moon date. “Jayanti” signifies a birthday, marking Buddha’s birth. “Buddha” refers to those attaining “bodhi” or wisdom, denoting Siddhartha’s enlightenment. The festival often corresponds with the month of “Vaisakhi” on Hindu/Buddhist lunar calendars.

The Evolution of Buddha Purnima Festivities

Interestingly, Buddha’s followers didn’t formally observe his birthday for centuries, instead honoring him through various festivals. Not until the 1950 World Fellowship of Buddhists conference in Sri Lanka did Buddha Purnima become an official celebration during Vesak. The full moon day in May was deemed auspicious, aligning with Buddha attaining nirvana.

Buddhism’s Global Reach and Adaptation

Buddhism spread due to core tenets like non-violence, respect for life, and progressive women’s roles. These resonated with traditional and modern values, spurring Buddhism’s adoption in Asia. Adapting to diverse cultures birthed global Buddhist sects, its inclusive nature gaining devotees across communities.
