Interview Techniques: Tips and Tricks To Be Known

  • Research the bank

Interview techniques begin with research. Do some thorough research into the Banks that are in your preference list or SBI/RBI/IDBI/NABARD. Learn and memorize their history, important stages of their development, illustrious people connected with the banks, the services the banks offer, etc. All this information will be available on the official bank websites.

  • Learn the banking sector terminology

Banks have their own parlance. Words like bank rates, borrowing rates, repo, reverse repo, RTGS, NEFT, CRR are concepts you have to be familiar with.

  • Learn about the economy

The economy and banks are intimately linked. So you may be quizzed on current events regarding recent economic developments. So get some in-depth knowledge about the economy and be prepared to confidently answer them.

  • Try out mock interviews

This is one of the smartest interview techniques. Like your written tests, you will benefit from mock interviews as well. Mock interviews will recreate the ambiance of bank interviews, complete with a panel and the expected questionnaire. You will get instant feedback after the mock test. You can learn where you went wrong, or where you need to improve upon.

  • Practice with someone in your family or with friends

If you want frequent practice, get someone to play the part of an interviewer. Tell them to ask you a variety of questions related to the bank interview and see how well you do.

  • Prepare an excellent CV

Your resume should be clean and direct. Do not embellish it or make any false additions because you will be caught and disqualified.

  • Be prepared to answer questions on your CV

Interviewers will ask you detailed questions on your CV. You will also have to talk about the subject you specialized in college or university.

  • Expect general questions

Interviewers try to gauge the candidate’s personality, honesty, and integrity by asking some personal but generic questions. You may be asked to talk about your family, your reason for choosing the college subjects that you did, what you expect from your work-place if you have ever faced any harassment and how you’ve dealt with it, etc.

  • Ask questions

This is a norm with all interviews and bank interviews are no exception. Ask the interviewers about what it is like to work at that specific bank, what the responsibilities are like. etc.

  • Improve your body language

Bank interviewers pay close attention to your body language. It says a lot about a person. So you should exude confidence and competence. Sit straight, smile and be affable when you interact. If there is a panel of interviewers, look at them all when you speak.

  • Practice in front of the mirror

You are your best judge. Stand in front of a mirror and pretend as if you are interacting with interviewers. Check if you seem nervous or if you are unconsciously making gestures like facial twitches, waving about of your hands etc.

  • Arrive well before time

Banks are very specific about punctuality. If you want to make a good impression on the panel, then arrive at least 30 minutes before time.

  • Keep your phone on silent mode

Under no circumstances should you allow your phone to interrupt the interview. Keep your phone on silent mode or don’t take it into the room at all.

  • Dress appropriately

Banking jobs are extremely formal. If you are a woman, formal trousers and shirt, professional Kurti or saree would be ideal. For men, it should only be formal trousers and shirt. Wear muted colours.

  • Thank the interview panel

Last impressions too matter. Once the interview is completed, warmly thank every interviewer.
