History of National Technology Day

Technology has made our lives easier and better. In 1999, India said thank you to technology by declaring May 11 as National Technology Day. This decision came after their big achievements in the previous year.

On May 11, 1998, India did three successful nuclear tests at the Pokhran Test Range. President Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam led two more tests on May 13, making India officially part of the nuclear power club. On the same day, India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation tested its first indigenous aircraft, the Hansa-3, and the Trishul missile.

Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee declared May 11 a day of big achievement. This led to the first celebration of National Technology Day in 1999. Since then, the Technology Development Board has honored scientists and engineers for their contributions.
