Interview with SSC CHSL 2024 Topper Benny Bisto, AIR 8
Q1: Congratulations Benny Bisto on securing AIR 8 in CHSL 2024! Can you tell us a bit about yourself and how life has changed since your selection?
A: Thank you so much! The result came out just two days ago, and I’m still overwhelmed with happiness. My family and I are ecstatic, and honestly, it’s hard to put into words what I’m feeling right now. This success means a lot to me and is just the beginning of a new chapter in life.
Educational Background and Its Role in SSC CHSL Preparation
Q2: How were you during your school and college days? Were you a serious or average student? Did you always want a government job?
A: I was an average student in college, not a topper. I always thought of getting a government job because of the security it offers, but I never started serious preparation early on. I was unsure which exam to focus on Kerala state exams or SSC. But by my final year, I realized SSC was a good option even for average students if they work hard and stay dedicated.
Preparation Journey & Timeline
Q3: How many attempts did you take to qualify SSC CHSL, and can you walk us through your preparation journey?
A: This was my first attempt, and it took me about 10 months of preparation. I started in September 2023, gave the prelims in July 2024. The first five months I focused on clearing basic concepts in reasoning, math, and English. Only after that did I start preparing for GK. For Tier 2, since the syllabus overlaps a lot with Tier 1, I prepared simultaneously but focused more on mocks after prelims to improve speed and accuracy.
Q4: As a fresher, how much time do you think one should spend to clear concepts and get ready for mocks?
A: At the start, don’t rush into too many mocks. Focus on clearing your basics in math and reasoning first. GK is vast, so I suggest not to start with it early. For English, it was relatively easy for me, so I gave it less time compared to math and reasoning. I studied around eight hours a day. But remember, everyone has their own strengths and weaknesses, so plan accordingly.
Preparation Strategy, Tier 1 & Tier 2
Q5: Should candidates prepare for Tier 1 and Tier 2 simultaneously? What should be the strategy?
A: Although the SSC CHSL Syllabus is almost same, Tier 2 is tougher in terms of difficulty and pattern. Focus more on Tier 1 preparation first because cutoffs are getting higher every year. Clear all your concepts, including tougher topics like probability and statistics, before the Tier 1 exam. After qualifying Tier 1, then focus more on mocks and practice for Tier 2.
Q6: Does appearing for SSC exams as a fresher or repeater make a difference?
A: Yes, it does. From analyzing past papers, the pattern and difficulty remain fairly consistent year to year. So with each attempt, the exam becomes easier because you understand the pattern better. But of course, clearing it in the first attempt with hard work is always better.
Q7: Can an absolute beginner crack SSC CHSL in six months of preparation?
A: Yes, it’s possible if you get a solid six months before prelims. Focus on basics and consistent practice. Quality matters more than quantity when it comes to preparation sources.
Resources & Study Material
Q8: How important is it to study from a single source?
A: Very important. Switching between many YouTube channels or books creates confusion and distractions. I limited myself to only a few trusted sources for all subjects to maintain clarity and focus.
Q9: Considering the dominance of Hindi content in SSC preparation, did you face challenges preparing in English medium? How did you overcome them?
A: Yes, initially it was tough because most quality content was in Hindi, and I don’t know Hindi well. I had to search harder for good English resources. It was challenging, but once I found reliable English medium materials, I stuck to them and avoided distractions.
Smart Tips & Advice for Aspirants
Q10: What is your advice for students who want to clear SSC CHSL on their first attempt?
A: Clear your concepts thoroughly before jumping to mocks. Prioritize math and reasoning, followed by English. Don’t start with GK early. Avoid jumping between too many resources. Stay consistent and trust your own preparation strategy rather than blindly following others. Hard work and smart planning will pay off.
Q11: Did you skip current affairs in your preparation?
A: Yes, I mostly skipped current affairs during mocks and didn’t prepare them in depth. Instead, I focused on other static GK topics. Live mocks helped me understand competition and timing more than current affairs.
Q12: Any final words of motivation for aspirants?
A: If an average student like me can crack this exam in the first attempt with proper planning and effort, so can you. Believe in yourself, clear your basics, and keep a positive attitude. Your hard work will definitely bear fruit.
