World Asthma Day 2024

World Asthma Day is an annual event that aims to make more people aware of the challenges those with asthma face. It’s organized by the Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA), healthcare groups, and asthma educators. This year, on May 7, the day serves as a reminder for everyone to join hands in understanding, managing, and supporting those dealing with this chronic respiratory condition.

World Asthma Day Theme 2024

The 2024 theme for World Asthma Day is “Uncovering Asthma Misconceptions,” to tackle prevalent myths and misunderstandings surrounding asthma.

History of World Asthma Day

Asthma is not a new problem; it has been around for a very long time. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), in 2019, around 262 million people had asthma, leading to over 460,000 deaths worldwide. But even in ancient times, asthma was known. Chinese writings from 2600 B.C. and records from Ancient Egypt talked about the difficulties in breathing.

The ancient Greek physician Hippocrates (460 to 370 B.C.) was the first to describe asthma in detail. He connected asthma symptoms to things in the environment and specific jobs. Around 100 B.C., Aretaeus of Cappadocia provided a detailed definition of asthma that sounds a lot like what we understand about the condition today. The Romans in 50 A.D. made links between pollen and breathing problems. Pliny the Elder, a Roman scholar, even suggested an early form of asthma treatment.

In the 19th century, doctors like Henry H. Salter made accurate descriptions of what happens in the lungs during asthma attacks. In 1892, William Osler noted similarities between asthma and allergies, emphasizing that it can run in families. He also pointed out specific things that can trigger asthma, like the weather, strong emotions, and diet. In the 1980s, there was a better understanding of asthma as an inflammatory condition, focusing on the importance of the immune system. Doctors realized it was necessary to manage asthma, even when there were no symptoms.
