World Cities Day Theme 2024

As of today, the theme for the World Cities Day 2024 has not been announced yet.

The theme in 2023 was “Financing sustainable urban future for all”.

This theme is important because it recognizes that financing is essential for achieving sustainable urban development.
Sustainable urban development requires investment in infrastructure, services, and housing.
It also requires investment in renewable energy, green spaces, and public transportation.
However, many cities around the globe are struggling to finance sustainable urban development.
This is due to several factors, including poverty, inequality, and climate change.

On World Cities Day 2023, we called for increased investment in sustainable urban development. We also worked to ensure that this investment was distributed equitably and that it benefits all members of society.

History of World Cities Day

World Cities Day was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 2013 in its resolution A/RES/68/239. The resolution designated October 31st as World Cities Day, beginning in 2014.

The purpose of this Day is to raise awareness about the importance of sustainable urbanization. Sustainable urbanization is the process of developing cities in a way that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.

World Cities Day is celebrated annually in different cities around the world. The host city is selected by the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat).

This Day is significant for several reasons. It is an opportunity to:

Sustainable urbanization is essential for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Cities are home to over half of the world’s population, and they are responsible for over 70% of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions. Sustainable urbanization requires investment in infrastructure, services, and housing that is environmentally friendly, equitable, and resilient.

Urban October

Urban October is an annual opportunity for people worldwide to engage in discussions and activities related to the challenges and opportunities arising from rapid urbanization in cities and towns. It encourages a broad range of stakeholders, including national and local governments, universities, NGOs, and communities, to participate in events and discussions throughout the month.

Urban October begins with World Habitat Day on the first Monday of October and concludes with World Cities Day on October 31. During this period, various activities, events, and discussions are held to address urbanization issues.

One of the highlights of World Habitat Day is the UN-Habitat Scroll of Honour award. This prestigious award is presented to selected winners during the global observance and includes a plaque engraved with the recipient’s name. The award acknowledges outstanding contributions to sustainable urbanization and housing.

Sustainable Development Goal (SDG)

Sustainable Development Goal 11 (SDG 11) is dedicated to making cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable. It underscores the essential mission of UN-Habitat to address urbanization challenges. Unfortunately, inequalities in cities have increased since 1980, and many of the world’s largest cities are also the most unequal. This year’s theme aligns with the New Urban Agenda’s emphasis on inclusive cities as a key element in the urban shift. The New Urban Agenda focuses on the practical implementation of policies and actions to create inclusive and sustainable cities.

The HABITAT III Conference

The HABITAT III Conference, which took place in Quito in October 2016, marked a significant milestone by adopting the New Urban Agenda. This framework is a crucial step in reimagining how cities are planned, governed, and inhabited. The New Urban Agenda is designed to guide the world in achieving sustainable urban development over the next two decades. It is closely linked to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which was agreed upon by all 193 Member States of the United Nations in September 2015. Together, these agendas address the pressing challenges of urbanization and sustainable development on a global scale.

On October 31, 2024, we observe World Cities Day, a global initiative aimed at spotlighting the significance of sustainable urbanization. This annual celebration serves as a reminder of the pivotal role cities play in our collective journey toward a more sustainable and resilient future.
