World Physiotherapy Day 2024

World Physiotherapy Day or World PT Day, celebrated annually on the 8th of September since 1996, commemorates the founding of the physiotherapy profession in 1951. In India, the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (DEPwD) operates under the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, serving as the central authority responsible for advancing the development agenda for Persons with Disabilities in the country.

In line with its mission to raise awareness about the importance of physiotherapy within the general population, the Department has scheduled the observance of World Physiotherapy Day on September 8, 2023. This occasion will involve a series of events conducted nationwide through affiliated institutions, aiming to highlight the significance of physiotherapy and its role in enhancing the well-being of individuals with disabilities.

World Physiotherapy Day Theme 2024

World PT Day serves as a tribute to the unwavering commitment of physiotherapists and the invaluable services they offer. They play a pivotal role in assisting individuals in attaining their best possible physical function, whether for basic mobility or intricate activities, regardless of whether the individuals are patients or in good health.

The official theme for World Physiotherapy Day 2024 hasn’t been announced yet.

History of World Physiotherapy Day

The World Confederation for Physical Therapy (WCPT) founded World Physiotherapy Day (WPTD) in 1996. The WCPT is the International Federation of Physiotherapy Organizations and it represents over 180,000 physiotherapists in 105 countries.

The first WPTD was celebrated in 1997 and it has been celebrated annually ever since. The theme for WPTD 2023 is “Physical Therapy: Moving People Forward”.

Objectives

The purpose of WPTD is to raise awareness of the importance of physiotherapy and to celebrate the work of physiotherapists around the world. Physiotherapy is a healthcare profession that helps people improve their movement and function. Physiotherapists work with people of all ages and abilities, from infants to the elderly, and with people with a wide range of conditions, from injuries to chronic diseases.

WPTD is an important event that helps to raise awareness of the importance of physiotherapy. It is a day to celebrate the work of Physiotherapists and to thank them for their dedication to helping people move and function better.

About The World Confederation for Physical Therapy

Founded in 1951, it is the sole international voice for physiotherapy. They represent more than 600,000 physiotherapists worldwide, through their 127 member organizations.  World Physiotherapy operates as a non-profit organization and is registered as a charity (World Confederation for Physical Therapy) in the UK.

Purpose – To represent physiotherapy across the globe, advancing the profession and advocating access for all, to improve health and wellbeing.
