World Space Week 2024 (4th-10th October), Theme & History

World Space Week 2024

World Space Week 2024 will be celebrated from October 4-10, 2024. It stands as the world’s most significant yearly space event. It aims to inspire students, demonstrate public backing for space endeavors, educate the public about space activities, and promote international collaboration in space outreach and education.

World Space Week Theme 2024

As of today, the theme for the World Space Week 2024 has not been announced yet.

Every year, the World Space Week Association Board of Directors collaborates closely with the UN Office of Outer Space Affairs to choose a theme. This theme serves as broad guidance for participants in World Space Week, ensuring a uniform global approach.

World Space Week 2023 aimed to inspire students worldwide to pursue STEM and business studies. It also provided space companies with the chance to recruit the workforce required for the expanding commercial space sector. Additionally, it served as a platform for crucial discussions on transitioning Low Earth Orbit into a more entrepreneurial ecosystem.

History of World Space Week

On October 4, 1957, the launch of Sputnik 1, the first human-made Earth satellite, marked the beginning of space exploration. A decade later, on October 10, 1967, the Treaty on Principles Governing the Activities of States in the Exploration and Use of Outer Space, including the Moon and Other Celestial Bodies, came into force. Recognizing the significance of space science and technology in improving the human condition, the General Assembly proclaimed World Space Week on December 6, 1999, through resolution 54/68.

Space science and technology and their applications play an increasingly vital role in various United Nations activities. Over 25 United Nations entities and the World Bank Group regularly utilize space applications, contributing significantly to UN initiatives, including those from major world conferences and the Third United Nations Conference on the Exploration and Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (UNISPACE III). These contributions are essential for advancing sustainable development goals.

UN and Space

Since the inception of the Space Age, the United Nations has recognized that outer space introduces a new dimension to human existence. The UN family is committed to harnessing the unique advantages of outer space for the betterment of all humanity.

  • Understanding the shared interest of humanity in outer space and the potential benefits it holds for people on Earth, the General Assembly adopted its first resolution concerning outer space, known as resolution 1348 (XIII), titled “Question of the Peaceful Use of Outer Space.”
  • On October 10, 1967, the “Magna Carta of Space,” officially called the Treaty on Principles Governing the Activities of States in the Exploration and Use of Outer Space, including the Moon and Other Celestial Bodies, came into effect.
  • Today, the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA) takes on the responsibility of promoting international cooperation in the peaceful use of outer space.
  • UNOOSA serves as the secretariat for the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS). It is the General Assembly’s sole committee which exclusively dedicates itself to international cooperation in the peaceful utilization of outer space.

UNOOSA also carries out the Secretary-General’s obligations under international space law and manages the United Nations Register of Objects Launched into Outer Space.

Significance of World Space Week

World Space Week is significant for several reasons. It is a time to:
