World Chagas Disease Day 2024

World Chagas Disease Day is observed annually on April 14 to increase awareness about this neglected disease. It is considered neglected because it receives little attention on the public health agenda. The World Health Assembly at WHO approved and endorsed on May 2019, with the first celebration held on April 14, 2020. Theme 2024: Early diagnosis, treatment and follow-up.

Chagas disease, also called American trypanosomiasis, is a communicable parasitic disease that has infected 6-7 million people and claims around 12,000 lives every year across the globe, according to WHO. It is caused by the parasite protozoan Trypanosoma cruzi. The disease is named after physician Carlos Chagas who first detected it in a Brazillian child in 1909.

World Quantum Day 2024

India celebrates World Quantum Day 2024 on April 14, 2024, with aspirations to become a global leader in various fields of Quantum Science and Technology.

Quantum Mechanics, the study of atoms and sub-atomic particles, has now advanced to such an extent that it has now moved to the engineering domain and is leading to novel and varied applications.

Researchers worldwide have utilized its principles to develop technologies such as LEDs, lasers, and ultra-precise atomic clocks used in the Global Positioning System. Considerable attention is now being paid to controlling and manipulating quantum systems for Quantum Computing, Quantum Communications, and Quantum Sensing applications.

To advance the awareness and appreciation of quantum science and technology among the public worldwide, an international initiative was taken in 2022, commemorated annually as World Quantum Day on April 14th. The National Quantum Mission (NQM) received Cabinet approval on April 19, 2023, with a total outlay of Rs 6003.65 Crore for eight years.

Russia launches first Angara-A5 space rocket from Far East Cosmodrome

The flagship Angara A5 — a powerful spacecraft designed to carry heavy payloads into low Earth orbit — took off from the Vostochny Cosmodrome in the Russian Far East. The Angara family of rockets, developed to replace the Soviet-designed Proton rockets, is central to Russia’s strategy to secure its independence in accessing outer space and to reduce reliance.

India-Uzbekistan Joint Military Exercise DUSTLIK begins on April 15

The fifth edition of India-Uzbekistan Joint Military Exercise Dustlik will commence at Termez District in Uzbekistan from April 15 onwards. Participating contingents from the Indian Armed Forces and the Armed Forces of the Republic of Uzbekistan will undergo joint training sessions during the exercise.

The fourth edition of the joint military exercise between the Indian Army and Uzbekistan Army was held on February 20 last year at the Foreign Training Node, Pithoragarh in Uttarakhand. The Indian Army contingent comprises troops from an infantry battalion from the Garhwal Rifles Regiment. The first edition of the exercise was held in Uzbekistan in November 2019.

Adani Group Builds the World’s Largest Renewable Energy Park in Gujarat

Adani Green Energy Limited is developing a 30 GW renewable energy plant on barren land at Khavda in Kutch of Gujarat over an area of 538 sq km after which it would become the planet’s largest power plant regardless of the energy source. The area of the project in Khavda is five times the size of Paris and almost as large as Mumbai.

The project was started in December 2022 and the first production was made on December 31, 2023. Adani Green Energy Limited will invest about Rs 1.5 lakh crore and Adani Group will invest about Rs 2.3 lakh crore in renewable energy and manufacturing capacity by 2030.

India outpaces China in digital services exports: WTO report

India has secured its place as the world’s 4th largest exporter of digitally delivered services, contributing more than a fifth to the global trade in services. As per a recent Global Trade Outlook and Statistics report by the World Trade Organisation, India’s exports of digitally delivered services reached $257 billion in 2023, marking a 17% increase compared to the previous year.

This growth outpaced that of Germany and China, which saw 4% growth each. The report highlights that globally, exports of digitally delivered services surged to $4.25 trillion in 2023, marking a 9% year-on-year increase. This accounted for 13.8% of world exports of goods and services.

Japan-based MUFG to acquire 20% stake in HDFC Bank’s non-banking arm at close to $10 bn valuation

The Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ (MUFG) is getting ready to acquire a 20% stake in HDB Financial Services, a non-banking subsidiary of HDFC Bank, at a valuation of $9-10 billion. HDFC Bank, the country’s largest private lender, currently owns around 95% of HDB Financial Services, with the remaining 5% held by employees under an Employee Stock Ownership plan.

The Warhead Flight Trials were successfully conducted at the Pokhran Field Firing Range, Rajasthan.

Industrial production grows 5.7% in Feb

India’s industrial production grew 5.7% in February 2024, according to official data released. The factory output measured in terms of the Index of Industrial Production (IIP) witnessed a growth of 6% in February 2023. The data released by the National Statistical Office (NSO) showed that the manufacturing sector’s output grew 5% in February 2024.

In February this year, mining production rose 8%, and power output increased 7.5%. The IIP grew 5.9% during April 2023-February 2024 compared to a 5.6% expansion in the year-ago period.

CAMS gets RBI’s nod to operate as an online payment aggregator

Computer Age Management Services Ltd said the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has granted authorization to the company to operate as an online payment aggregator. It received it after the business became regulated consequent to the issue of ‘Guidelines on Regulation of Payment Aggregators and Payment Gateways’ (Guidelines) in March 2020.

IndusInd Intl Holdings buys 60% of the Indian arm of Invesco

IndusInd International Holdings (IIHL) will acquire a 60% stake in Invesco Asset Management. Invesco will retain a 40% stake in the fund house, while both IIHL and Invesco will have sponsor status. Invesco is the fifth-largest foreign asset manager and the 17th largest domestic asset manager in India with combined onshore and offshore advisory and assets under management.

India, US to reactivate observation system for Indian Ocean

India and the US have decided to reactivate the Indian Ocean Observing System, a network of 36 moored buoys in the high seas to collect high-resolution ocean and atmospheric data for weather forecasts. The moored buoys are part of the Research Moored Array for African-Asian-Australian Monsoon Analysis and Prediction program.

It was born out of a collaboration between the Ministry of Earth Sciences and NOAA in 2008. The RAMA moored buoys also provide important verification data for air-sea flux products and satellite measurements.
