The Indian Navy conducted a two-day comprehensive Coastal Security Exercise known as Sagar Kavach 02/23. This exercise involved all maritime security agencies and took place in the states of Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, as well as the Union Territory of Puducherry. It was carried out from the 11th to the 12th of October 2023.
About the Sagar Kavach Exercise
The Coastal Security Exercise Sagar Kavach 02/23 was carried out under the authority of the Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief Eastern Naval Command, who also holds the role of Commander-in-Chief, Coastal Defence (East). The exercise involved approximately 2500 personnel from various agencies, including the Indian Navy, Coast Guard, State and Union Territory Administrations, Marine Police, Fisheries, Customs, Intelligence Agencies, Lighthouses, Ports, and Forest Departments, among others. The coordinated efforts of these agencies are crucial for maintaining and enhancing coastal security in the region.
Aim of the Coastal Security Exercise
The Coastal Security Exercise Sagar Kavach 02/23 had the primary objective of evaluating the effectiveness and resilience of the coastal security apparatus, particularly in addressing asymmetric threats originating from the sea. To achieve this, Indian Naval Ships, as well as assets from the Coast Guard and other coastal security agencies, were deployed to enhance surveillance in the region. The exercise involved implementing heightened security measures and conducting extensive aerial surveillance using Dornier aircraft and helicopters stationed in Visakhapatnam, Chennai, and Ramnathapuram.
Significance of the Sagar Kavach Coastal Security Exercise
The Joint Operations Centre (East) in Visakhapatnam played a pivotal role in closely monitoring the exercise, serving as the central hub for all coastal security operations and exercises in the area of operations. The exercise showcased the remarkable coordination and synergy among all coastal security stakeholders, including the Indian Navy, Coast Guard, and various other agencies involved. The insights gained from this exercise will be invaluable in strengthening the overall coastal security architecture, ensuring the safety and security of the nation’s maritime boundaries.
