Important Days

World Post Day is celebrated each year on October 9 globally.

  • Theme of 2021 World Post Day is “Innovate to recover.”
  • The purpose of World Post Day is to create awareness of the role of the postal sector in the everyday lives and businesses’ of the people and its contribution to the social and economic development of countries.
  • October 9 was chosen as it marks the anniversary of the Universal Postal Union (UPU), which was created in 1874 in Switzerland.
  • The first World Post Day was celebrated in 1969.

Every year, World Migratory Bird Day (WMBD) is officially celebrated twice in a year since it started in 2006.

  • Firstly it is held on Second Saturday of May and again on Second Saturday of October.
  • In 2021, the WMBBD falls on May 08, 2021 and October 09, 2021.
  • The day is observed to spread awareness for the need to conserve migratory birds and their habitats
  • The theme for 2021 WMBD is “Sing, Fly, Soar – Like a Bird!”

2021 Nobel Peace Prize

  • The 2021 Nobel Peace Prize have been conferred jointly upon Filipino-American
  • journalist Maria Ressa and Russian journalist Dmitry Muratov.
  • The duo have been honoured “for their efforts to safeguard freedom of expression, which is a precondition for democracy and lasting peace”.
  • Maria Angelita Ressa is a Filipino-American journalist and author, the co-founder and CEO of Rappler, a Philippine online news website.
  • Dmitry Andreyevich Muratov is a Russian journalist and editor-in-chief of the Russian newspaper Novaya Gazeta

Nobel Prize in Chemistry

  • Nobel Prize in Chemistry for the year 2021 has been awarded jointly to Benjamin List (Germany) and David MacMillan (the USA) “for the development of asymmetric organocatalysis”.
  • The duo has been awarded for their work in developing a new way for building molecules known as “asymmetric organocatalysis.”

Nobel Prize in Literature 2021 was awarded to Abdulrazak Gurnah born in Zanzibar and active in England, “for his uncompromising and compassionate penetration of the effects of colonialism and the fate of the refugee in the gulf between cultures and continents.

  • Tanzanian novelist was born in Zanzibar in 1948 and has since lived in the UK and Nigeria.
  • He writes in English, and his most famous novel is Paradise, which was shortlisted for the Booker prize in 1994
  • Gurnah currently lives in the UK and taught English Literature at the University of Kent.

2021 Nobel Prize in Physics on October 05, 2021.

  • Half of the award has been given jointly to US-based Syukuro Manabe and Klaus
    Hasselmann of Germany “for the physical modelling of Earth’s climate, quantifying variability and reliably predicting global warming”
  • The other half of the award has been conferred to Giorgio Parisi from Italy “for the discovery of the interplay of disorder and fluctuations in physical systems from atomic to planetary scales.”
  • Prize amount: 10 million Swedish kronor.

National News

Air India will head back to the Tata Group after decades of flying as the national carrier.

  • Tata Sons will pay Rs 18,000 crore for the Maharaja, outbidding a consortium led by SpiceJet’s Ajay Singh who had bid Rs 15,100 crore.

State in News

  • Maharashtra has launched a special Covid-19 vaccination drive named Mission Kavach Kundal, with the target of inoculating 15 lakh people every day.
  • The week-long drive has been organised from October 08 to October 14, 2021.
  • The drive is in line with the Centre’s target of reaching 100 crore vaccination mark till 15 October 2021

International Financial Services Centres Authority (IFSCA) has launched the global FinTech Hackathon Series ‘I-Sprint’21’ on October 07, 2021.

  • The first Sprint of the series is “Sprint01: BankTech”, which focuses on FinTechs for the Banking sector.
  • Sprint01: BankTech is organised jointly by IFSCA and GIFT city in collaboration with NITI Aayog.
  • The Partners to the Hackathon are ICICI Bank, HSBC Bank, iCreate, Zone Startups and Invest-India
  • The hackathon will be conducted virtually and is open for all eligible FinTechs from across the Globe.
  • The Price money for this hackathon is Rs 24 lakh

Aim of Sprint01: BankTech Hackathon:

  • To connect IFSCA and GIFT IFSC with FinTech Ecosystem
  • To solve Business Problems for the Banking Units at GIFT IFSC and
  • To promote retail business for the Banking Units at GIFT IFSC.

Monetary Policy Update: October 6-8, 2021

  • The monetary Policy Committee (MPC) of the RBI has announced that the policy repo rate under the LAF will be kept unchanged at 4.0 per cent.
  • As a result, the remaining rates are also unchanged and are mentioned below:
  •  Reverse Repo Rate- 3.35%
  •  Marginal Standing Facility Rate- 4.25%
  •  Bank Rate- 4.25%
  •  CRR- 4.00%
  •  SLR- 18.00%
  • The MPC also decided to continue with the accommodative stance.
  • RBI has retained the projection for real GDP growth at 9.5 per cent in 2021-22.
  • CPI Inflation Projected at 5.3% for Current Fiscal
  • The next MPC meet will be held between December 6 to 8, 2021

Fitch Ratings has revised downwards, India’s economic growth projections to 8.7 per cent in the current financial year 2021-22.

  • Earlier this was projected at 10 per cent.
  • For the financial year FY23 (2022-23) the gross domestic product (GDP) growth for India is estimated at 10 per cent, as compared to its earlier estimates of 8.5 per cent.
  • The rating agency has retained India’s sovereign rating at BBB- with a negative outlook.

GDP Update

United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) has pegged India’s economic growth rate as follows, in its Trade and Development report released on September 15, 2021:
 Calendar Year (CY) 2021 – 7.2%
 Calendar Year 2022 – 6.7%

  • India’s economy shrank by 7 per cent in Calendar Year 2020.
  • S&P Global Ratings has revised India’s growth forecast and now expects the economy to grow 9.5 per cent in 2021-22 (FY22) and 7.0 per cent in 2022-23 (FY23).
  • HDFC Bank has projected India’s GDP growth rate for FY22 at 10%. This is lower than its earlier prediction of 11.5%.
  • Nomura has cut the GDP growth estimate of India for the current 2021-22 fiscal
  • (FY22) to 10.8 per cent from the earlier projection of 12.6 per cent.

Q4 Henley Passport Index 2021

  • India has been ranked at 90th position among 116 countries, on the Henley Passport Index, released for Q4 of 2021 on October 07, 2021. The index lists the world’s most travel-friendly passports.
  • India’s position has dropped by six places, compared to last year (2020), during the same period, when it was placed at 84th spot.
  • Japan and Singapore share the top position in the latest index, with their passports holders allowed to travel visa-free to 192 countries.
  • The Henley Passport Index ranks the passports of countries according to the number of destinations their holders can visit without a prior visa.
  • The rankings are based on the analysis of data provided by the International Air Transport Association (IATA).
  • For India, its passport holders are allowed to travel visa-free to 58 countries. India shares its rank with Tajikistan and Burkina Faso.
  • Afghanistan has the world’s least powerful passports, with a visa-free score of 26.

Committee

International Financial Services Centres Authority has constituted an Expert Committee to recommend an approach towards the development of Sustainable Finance Hub at IFSC.

  • The expert committee will be chaired by Shri C.K. Mishra, Former Secretary to Government of India, Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change.
  • The committee consists of total 10 members
  • The committee shall study the current regulatory practices in Sustainable Finance across major International financial jurisdictions and recommend a robust framework to develop a world-class sustainable finance hub at IFSC, along with a road map for the same.
