Global Maritime India Summit 2023 (GMIS 2023)

The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways is preparing for the highly anticipated maritime event, the Global Maritime India Summit-2023 (GMIS-2023). Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, along with Minister of State (PSW), Shripad Y. Naik, held a media briefing in Mumbai to provide information about the upcoming summit.

A booklet on GMIS 2023 titled “Navigating Excellence: India’s Maritime Sector” was released on the occasion.

GMIS-2023 will take place from the 17th to the 19th of October at the MMRDA Grounds in BKC, Mumbai. This summit will bring together key stakeholders and participants from the maritime industry to discuss and showcase the latest developments, innovations, and opportunities in the maritime sector. It serves as a platform for promoting India’s maritime interests and fostering collaboration within the industry.

About Global Maritime India Summit 2023 (GMIS 2023)

The Global Maritime India Summit 2023 (GMIS 2023) is a two-day international summit on the maritime sector. It will be held on October 17-19, 2023. The summit is organized by the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Government of India.

The 3rd edition of the Global Maritime India Summit 2023 (GMIS-2023) is set to be a significant and inclusive event, surpassing the scale and participation of the previous two summits held in 2016 and 2021.

Indian Maritime Sector

The Indian maritime sector plays a pivotal role in the economic growth of India. With a vast coastline of more than 7,500 km, India is among the largest maritime countries in the world.

Being a part of the world’s busiest trade route elevates the economic prominence of India’s maritime sector. 95% of India’s foreign trade and 70% of its total trade in terms of value takes place through seaways.

Today, India is home to 12 major ports, over 200 other ports, 30 shipyards, and a comprehensive hub of diverse maritime service providers.

  • GMIS-2023 is expected to attract participation from over 70 countries, with senior ministers from various nations, including the UAE, South Africa, Armenia, Italy, Sri Lanka, Turkmenistan, Belarus, Bangladesh, and Madagascar, attending the summit.
  • The event will feature more than 250 national and international speakers and CEOs, along with over 20 thematic sessions, including 7 international roundtables and more than 13 sectoral and state discussions.
  • Topics for discussion will include regional cooperation in BIMSTEC countries, Chabahar and INSTC, Africa, Indo-Pacific, Europe, and the newly launched IMEC (India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor).

Significance of the Global Maritime India Summit

GMIS 2023 is in line with the Prime Minister’s vision of ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ and encompasses a broad spectrum of opportunities for Public-Private Partnerships (PPP). It has identified investment opportunities worth Rs. 10 lakh crore across the maritime sector, with the potential to create more than 15 lakh job opportunities.

  • GMIS-2023 will provide opportunities for public-private partnerships in various maritime sectors such as ports, shipbuilding, waterways, and maritime education.
  • The summit has identified several focus areas, including Ports of the Future, Decarbonisation, Coastal Shipping and Inland Water Transport (IWT), Shipbuilding, Repair and Recycling, Finance, Insurance, and Arbitration, Innovation and Technology, Maritime Safety and Security, and Maritime Tourism.
  • This summit aims to showcase India’s maritime potential and promote collaboration and investment in the maritime industry.

The overarching goal is to promote a blue economy, emphasizing the development of green ports, sustainable infrastructure, cruise tourism, and attracting global investments to drive the maritime industry’s growth and sustainability.
