About Infantry Day

History of Indian Army Infantry Day

On October 26, 1947, Maharaja of Jammu and Kashmir, Hari Singh, signed the Instrument of Accession, joining the Indian Dominion. In response, Pakistan invaded Kashmir on October 22, 1947, to forcibly annex the state.

77th Infantry Day

On October 27, 1947, the first Indian troops, led by Lieutenant Colonel Dewan Ranjit Rai, landed at Srinagar Airport. The Indian troops were outnumbered and outgunned, but they fought bravely and managed to secure the airport. The arrival of Indian troops turned the tide of the war and ultimately led to the defeat of the Pakistani forces.
