About Infantry Day
Infantry Day is celebrated annually on October 27 to commemorate the landing of Indian troops in Srinagar on October 27, 1947, to liberate Jammu and Kashmir from the invading Pakistani forces.
History of Indian Army Infantry Day
On October 26, 1947, Maharaja of Jammu and Kashmir, Hari Singh, signed the Instrument of Accession, joining the Indian Dominion. In response, Pakistan invaded Kashmir on October 22, 1947, to forcibly annex the state.
On October 27, 1947, the first Indian troops, led by Lieutenant Colonel Dewan Ranjit Rai, landed at Srinagar Airport. The Indian troops were outnumbered and outgunned, but they fought bravely and managed to secure the airport. The arrival of Indian troops turned the tide of the war and ultimately led to the defeat of the Pakistani forces.
Infantry Day was first celebrated in 1948 to commemorate the sacrifices made by Indian Infantry soldiers in the liberation of Jammu and Kashmir. Over the years, this day has become an important occasion to pay tribute to all Indian Infantry soldiers, past and present, for their courage, dedication, and service to the nation.
