MEITY Signs MoU with IBM on Quantum, AI & Semiconductor

IBM has signed three Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with entities associated with the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) in India. These agreements aim to promote and expedite innovation in the fields of Artificial Intelligence (AI), Semiconductors, and Quantum Technology within India.

The collaborative efforts under these MoUs will play a role in advancing India’s comprehensive national strategy for AI, boosting self-reliance in semiconductor technology, and furthering the objectives of India’s National Quantum Mission. These initiatives demonstrate a commitment to harnessing cutting-edge technologies for India’s technological and economic growth.

3 MoUs between MeitY and IBM

The Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) signed between IBM and entities associated with the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) encompass various key areas:

  1. National AI Innovation Platform (AIIP): IBM will collaborate with IndiaAI – Digital India Corporation to establish the National AI Innovation Platform (AIIP). This platform will focus on AI skill development, building an ecosystem, and integrating advanced AI models and generative AI capabilities. The goal is to support India’s scientific, commercial, and human capital development in AI. The AIIP will serve as an accelerator for incubating and enhancing competency in AI technologies for use in national priority areas.
  2. India Semiconductor Mission (ISM): IBM will partner with the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM) to establish a semiconductor research center. IBM will share its expertise, intellectual property, tools, and skills development initiatives to promote innovation in semiconductor technologies, including logic, advanced packaging, heterogeneous integration, and chip design. This collaboration aims to drive innovation in semiconductor technologies with modernized infrastructure.
  3. India’s National Quantum Mission: IBM will explore opportunities for collaboration with the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) to support India’s National Quantum Mission. This partnership will focus on developing competency in quantum computing technology, applications in areas of national significance, and a skilled quantum workforce. Activities will include workforce development, industry and startup support, research and development, and the establishment of quantum services and infrastructure.

These collaborations are designed to accelerate India’s growth and innovation in AI, semiconductor technology, and quantum computing, with a focus on building the necessary skills and infrastructure.

Significance of the MoUs

Semiconductors, Artificial Intelligence (AI), and Quantum technologies are poised to be transformative forces in the future. These advancements offer significant potential for our academic institutions, startups, and innovation ecosystem. The broader opportunity lies in nurturing a globally competitive talent pool in India, well-equipped to harness the potential of quantum computing, AI, and semiconductors.

IBM’s collaboration with IndiaAI, ISM, and C-DAC to concentrate on skill development, engaging with ecosystems, and accelerating research and development efforts in the fields of semiconductors, AI, and quantum is designed to propel and expedite India’s innovations in these domains. This partnership underscores the commitment to fostering technological progress and enhancing India’s position in the global tech landscape.
