About the President of Tanzania, H.E. Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan

Her Excellency Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan is the sixth and current president of the United Republic of Tanzania. She is the first female president of Tanzania and the first president of Tanzania to have been born in Zanzibar.

Dr. Hassan was born on January 27, 1960, in Mkunazini, Zanzibar.
She received her bachelor’s degree in development administration from the University of Dar es Salaam in 1988. Her master’s degree in public administration from the University of Manchester in 1994.
She also holds a doctorate in community economic development from the Open University of Tanzania, awarded in 2015.
Dr. Hassan began her career in the civil service in 1988.
She held a number of positions in the Zanzibar government, including Minister of Tourism, Culture, and Sports from 2000 to 2005 and Minister of Education and Vocational Training from 2005 to 2010.
In 2010, she was elected to the National Assembly of Tanzania. She represented the Makunduchi constituency.
She was appointed Vice President of Tanzania in 2015. She served in that position until she became president in 2021.
Dr. Hassan is a member of the Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) party.
She is also a Muslim and a mother of four.
