The 16th Agricultural Science Congress (ASC) was inaugurated by Shri Parshottam Rupala, Union Minister for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry, and Dairying, at Hotel Le Meridien in Kochi. This prestigious event brought together a diverse group of experts, including agricultural economists, scientists, policymakers, academicians, farmers, and entrepreneurs, who gathered in Kochi for four days to participate in discussions and activities related to agricultural science and innovation.

The 16th Agricultural Science Congress (ASC) brought together a distinguished gathering of agricultural experts, including renowned agricultural economists, scientists, policymakers, academicians, farmers, and entrepreneurs. This significant event took place in Kochi over four days, starting on October 10. The congress served as a dynamic platform for discussions and deliberations on how to transform the agrifood system to achieve sustainable development goals (SDGs).

Objectives

The 16th Agricultural Science Congress (ASC) had a central objective of fostering a scientific discourse on the transformation of India’s agri-food systems into sustainable enterprises, ensuring their benefits for future generations. This landmark event was organized by the National Academy of Agricultural Sciences (NAAS). It marked its first occurrence in Kerala, with the ICAR-Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) serving as the host institution.

Topics of Discussion at the Agricultural Science Congress

The 16th Agricultural Science Congress (ASC) featured discussions on ten thematic areas that encompassed a wide range of issues related to agriculture and allied fields. These areas included sustainability concerns related to land and water, agricultural production systems, agricultural products, machinery, climate action, economics, renewable energy, precision farming, alternative farming systems, coastal agriculture, and next-generation technologies. Distinguished experts, such as Dr. Madhur Gautam from the World Bank, Dr. Krishna Ella, CMD of Bharat Biotech, Dr. Vijay Paul Sharma, Chairman of the Commission for Agricultural Costs and Prices, Dr. Prabhu Pingali, founding director of Tata Cornell Institute, Dr. Rishi Sharma from FAO, and Dr. Kadambot Siddique, led various sessions during the congress.

Plenary Talks

The 16th Agricultural Science Congress (ASC) boasts an extensive agenda, including five plenary lectures by eminent figures in the field of agriculture and related sectors. The Congress will also feature three-panel discussions and four symposiums that will cover various topics, such as coastal agriculture and livelihood, the promotion of millets, youth empowerment, and gender equity. A noteworthy aspect of the 16th ASC is the Farmer-Scientist Interface session, which will facilitate direct knowledge exchange and experiences between the farming community and leading researchers.

This congress will bring together more than 1,500 delegates from India and around the world. Additionally, an Agri Expo held alongside the event will showcase innovative agricultural technologies from public and private sector research institutes, universities, agro-industries, extension agencies, and NGOs.
