World Oceans Day is observed annually on June 8 to make people aware of the negative impact of human activities such as garbage disposal, sewage, oil leaks from ships, and drilling station accidents.

The United Nations (UN) declared World Oceans Day as an official occasion in 2008.

Himachal jumps to third spot in Anemia Mukt Bharat Index

Himachal Pradesh has climbed to the third spot in the Anemia Mukt Bharat Index 2020-21 national ranking with a score of 57.1.

Madhya Pradesh is in the first position with a score of 64.1 followed by Odisha with a score of 59.3.

The prevalence of soil-transmitted helminths had decreased from 29% to 0.3% in a short span of three years.

Steadfast Defender 2021 will be the first large-scale test of NATO’s adapted Command Structure, with the involvement of two new NATO commands.

RBI slaps Rs 6 cr fine on Bank of India, PNB for contravention of norms

The RBI imposed penalty aggregating to Rs 6 crore on Bank of India and Punjab National Bank for contravention of norms, including one related to "Frauds - Classification and Reporting".

A penalty of Rs 4 crore has been imposed on Bank of India and Rs 2 crore on Punjab National Bank.

World Bank approves $500 mn program to help boost India's MSME sector

The World Bank's Board of Executive Directors has approved a USD 500 million program to support India's nationwide initiative to revitalise the MSME sector, which has been heavily impacted by the COVID-19 crisis.

The program targets improvements in the performance of 555,000 MSMEs.

India exports 11,49,341 tonnes of seafood during FY21

India’s seafood exports have slumped by nearly 11% in volume and value in FY21 as coronavirus pandemic disrupted production and supply in key markets.

The volume shrunk by 10.88% at 11,49,341 tonnes from a year ago.

In dollar terms the export plummeted by 10.81% to $5.96 billion, a three-year low.

Oman to host inaugural FIH Hockey5s World Cup in 2024

Oman has been named as the host of the inaugural International Hockey Federation (FIH) Hockey5s World Cup.

The FIH said the men’s and women’s events will take place in Oman’s capital city Muscat in January 2024.

Bids were received from Oman, India, Pakistan and Singapore to host the event.

Raimona becomes Assam’s sixth national park

Raimona in Kokrajhar district has become Assam’s sixth national park.

Eastern Assam’s Dehing Patkai Wildlife Sanctuary, under stress for unregulated coal mining in the vicinity, is in the process of becoming the seventh national park.

The five national parks that existed prior to the 422 sq. km Raimona are Kaziranga, Manas, Nameri, Orang and Dibru-Saikhowa.

Nuclear weapons spending swelled $1.4 billion amid pandemic: International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN) Report

According to ICAN, even as the pandemic raged and economies around the world were devastated, nuclear-armed countries last year increased spending on atomic weapon arsenals by 1.4 billion dollars.

The United States spent more than half of the total amount, at $37.4 billion.

China was believed to have spent some $10 billion, and Russia $8.0 billion.

Indian Navy Set to Receive Three MH-60 'Romeo' Multi-role Helicopters from US in July

The Indian Navy will receive three of the 24 MH-60 “Romeo” multi-role helicopters from the US in July, according to reports. India had signed a Rs 15,157 crore ($2.13 billion) contract with the US for the Lockheed Martin choppers in February 2020 in a significant ramp-up of military capabilities for the Navy in detecting and destroying enemy submarines in the Indian Ocean.
