World Bank projects India’s economy to grow at 8.3% in 2021 and 7.5% in 2022

The World Bank projected India’s economy to grow at 8.3 percent in 2021 and 7.5 percent in 2022, even as its recovery is being hampered by an unprecedented second wave of the COVID-19, the largest outbreak in the world since the beginning of the deadly pandemic.

According to World Bank report, the global economy is set to expand by 5.6 percent in 2021.

Zimbabwean novelist Tsitsi Dangarembga wins PEN Pinter prize 2021

Tsitsi Dangarembga, the Booker-shortlisted Zimbabwean writer who was arrested last year in Harare while protesting against corruption, has been awarded the PEN Pinter prize, praised for her “ability to capture and communicate vital truths even amidst times of upheaval”. The prize is given by free speech campaigners English PEN in memory of the Nobel laureate Harold Pinter.

France pledges 1 million euros for solar alliance

France will make a direct contribution of 1 million euros to the International Solar Alliance.

Andhra Pradesh Govt Switches Liquor Policy from Prohibition to Restriction

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy announced a major shift in his government's liquor policy, moving away from prohibition (nishedham) to restriction (niyantrana).

The government has escrowed revenue from liquor sales and borrowed more than Rs 10,000 crore from various banks, the policy has ostensibly been changed from prohibition to restriction.

K P Krishnan panel on variable capital company (VCC) submits report to International Financial Services Centres Authority

International Financial Services Centres Authority (IFSCA) constituted panel on variable capital company submitted its report with a recommendation to adopt a VCC-like legal structure for conducting fund management activity in IFSCs.

The panel headed by former Skill Development Secretary K P Krishnan examined the feasibility and suitability of the variable capital company.

Government launches X-Ray Setu on WhatsApp to detect COVID-19 cases in areas with no RT-PCR tests

Government has launched an artificial intelligence based X-Ray Setu which can be operated through WhatsApp. For this project, the government plans to onboard 10,000 doctors in small towns where RT-PCR and CT Scans are not available for COVID detection.

This is going to be an important tool for rural doctors who are struggling to source equipment for covid detection.

The Punjab government on the occasion of International Menstrual Hygiene Day (28 May) launched a scheme to provide free sanitary napkins to needy girls and women across the state.

An amount of Rs 40.55 crore per annum will be incurred on the scheme, called 'Udaan'.The new scheme would cover school drop-outs, out-of-school girls, young women not attending college , etc.
