IOC apex body accepts a proposal to include cricket in the 2028 Olympics

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) executive board has accepted a proposal to include T20I Cricket along with squash, lacrosse, flag football and baseball / softball in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. If included, cricket will be making a comeback to the Olympics after a gap of 128 years. Cricket’s only appearance in the event was the 1900 Paris Olympics.

International Day of Rural Women | 15 October

The International Day of Rural Women was first celebrated in 2008, following a resolution adopted by the United Nations General Assembly. The day was established to acknowledge the vital contributions of rural women to their communities and the global economy and celebrate the critical role that rural women play in agriculture, food production and rural development.

World Students' Day | 15 October

October 15 is commemorated as World Students' Day in honour of the notable contributions of former President Dr APJ Abdul Kalam in the field of education. This observance coincides with the birth anniversary of Dr Kalam, India's 11th President, renowned as the 'Missile Man of India'. He was a distinguished scientist and administrator who worked with the DRDO.

Maharashtra's youngest Grandmaster Raunak crowned U-20 world champion

17-year-old Raunak Sadhwani from Nagpur, Maharashtra, emerged as the U-20 World Junior Rapid Chess champion in Italy. Sadhwani became a Grandmaster aged 13, making him the 9th youngest in the world at the time to achieve the norm.

Bharti Group to acquire AXA’s 49% stake in Bharti AXA Life Insurance

Bharti Group has signed an agreement with its partner AXA to acquire the latter’s 49 per cent stake in Bharti AXA Life Insurance. Bharti Life Ventures, the group’s holding company for Bharti AXA Life Insurance, will become the sole owner of the life insurance post the stake sale, it said in a release. The transaction, expected to be completed by December 2023.

Christopher Luxon wins New Zealand election after incumbent Prime Minister Chris Hipkins concedes

Conservative Former businessman Christopher Luxon will be New Zealand’s next Prime Minister after winning a decisive election victory.

People voted for change after six years of a liberal government led for most of that time by Jacinda Ardern.

With more than two-thirds of the vote counted, Mr. Luxon’s National Party had about 40% of the vote.

Former England captain Alastair Cook, his country's record test run scorer, announced his retirement from professional cricket. The 38-year-old left-handed opener, who retired from international cricket in 2018, played his entire county career with Essex. Cook was England test captain from 2012 to 2017 and also captain for 69 one day internationals from 2010-14.

Tallest BR Ambedkar Statue Outside India Unveiled In Washington

A statue of Dr B R Ambedkar, the principal architect of India's Constitution was formally inaugurated in a Maryland suburb in Washington. It is touted to be the tallest statue of Ambedkar outside India. The statue has been named 'Statue of Equality' and is 19 feet tall. The statue was made by renowned artist and sculptor Ram Sutar, who also built the statue of Sardar Patel.

Partners with 10% stake to come under beneficial owners: Sebi tweaks rules

Capital markets regulator Sebi tweaked guidelines pertaining to anti-money laundering standards, whereby partners holding a 10 per cent stake in a firm will come under the definition of beneficial owners. Earlier, requirement was 15 per cent. The development comes after the government amended the Prevention of Money Laundering (Maintenance of Records) Rules or PMLA rules.
