Global Media and Information Literacy Week, 24-31 October

Global Media and Information Literacy Week is observed from 24th- 31st of October. In 2021, the UN Assembly decided to commemorate Media and Information Literacy week, citing the need for the dissemination of factual, timely, targeted, clear, accessible, multilingual and science-based information. 2022 Theme: Nurturing trust - A Media and Information Literacy Imperative.

Disarmament Week 2022 | 24-30 October

On October 24 the day United Nations was established in 1945 Disarmament Week commences. It was after the United Nations General Assembly had a special session on disarmament in 1978 that Disarmament Week was first observed. The organisation marks October 24 to October 30 as Disarmament Week each year. The United Nations Disarmament Commission was established in 1952.

Cyclonic Storm Sitrang makes landfall in Bangladesh, weakens into Depression

Cyclone Sitrang made its landfall in a densely-populated low-lying area of Bangladesh on 24th October. The cyclone is said to have moved towards Bangladesh from the north Bay of Bengal at a speed of 56 kmph, causing moderate to heavy rain and squally weather in West Bengal's coastal districts of South 24 Parganas, North 24 Parganas and East Midnapore

Uttar Pradesh govt bags Rs 16,000-crore deal for data centre projects

Under this proposed policy, the state is planning to set up smaller capacity data centres in the hinterland across the state. The policy will aim to attract private sector investment to attain Rs 30,000 crore in the next five years. Data centre projects in UP include those of Hiranandani Group, Adani Group, NTT Japan, and Web Werks, among others.

Ukrainian people win EU's 2022 Sakharov freedom prize

The European Parliament has awarded its top human rights prize to the people of Ukraine. The Sakharov Prize for freedom of thought named after the late Soviet dissident Andrei Sakharov and has been awarded annually since 1988 to individuals and organizations defending human rights and freedoms. Other nominees included Wikileaks founder Julian Assange and “Truth Commission".

PFRDA revises equity exposure permitted in NPS for Tier I and Tier II accounts

For Tier 1 and Tier II National Pension System (NPS) accounts, the Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA) has modified the equity allocation standards. According to the new regulation, subscribers can allocate up to 75% of their funds to equity (E) under active choice in a Tier-I account without any tapering requirements once they turn 51 years of age.

Anna May Wong to be first Asian American featured on US currency

Anna May Wong is set to become the first Asian American to appear on US currency. This year, four other quarters were into production featuring poet and activist Maya Angelou; the first American woman in space, Sally Ride; Cherokee Nation leader Wilma Mankiller; and suffragist Nina Otero-Warren. Anna May Wong died aged 56 in 1961.

Netherlands beats China, becomes India's third-largest export market
