Indian-origin engineer Amit Kshatriya to lead NASA’s Moon to Mars programme

Indian-origin software and robotics engineer Amit Kshatriya has been appointed to head NASA's newly-established 'Moon to Mars' programme.

He will serve as the first head of office for the programme with immediate effect and will help the agency ensure a long-term lunar presence needed to prepare for humanity’s next giant leap to the Red planet.

Reserve Bank of India (RBI) foundation day | April 1

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) turned 88.

The Indian Central Bank was established on April 1, 1935.

RBI was established in response to the Hilton Young Commission's recommendations. The Reserve Bank of India Act, 1934 (II of 1934) establishes the legal framework for the Bank's operations, which began on April 1, 1935.

Utkal Divas 2023

Utkal Divas or Odisha Day is celebrated every year on 1 April. This year is the 88th foundation day.

The day recognizes the separation of the Odisha from the Bihar and Orissa province on 1 April 1936.

Odisha achieved statehood in 1950.

Odisha Day is also known as Odisha Foundation Day and Utkala Dibasa.

Prevention of Blindness Week 2023

The Government of India organises the Prevention of Blindness Week from April 1-7 every year to raise awareness about the causes and prevention of blindness.

Jawaharlal Nehru and Raj Kumari Amrit Kaur, the first health minister of India, established the National Society for the Prevention of Blindness and along with it, the observance of the week was started in 1960.

Noted author Sara Thomas, a two-time Sahitya Akademi award winner, dies at 88.

Sara Thomas is a two-time recipient of the Kerala Sahitya Akademi award.

Her noted work ‘Narmadipudava’ won the Kerala Sahitya Akademi award in 1979. She was also awarded the academy’s award in 2010 for overall contribution to Malayalam literature.

She has written 17 novels and more than 100 short stories.

Output of eight core industries jumps 6% in February, dip in crude oil

Combined index for 8 core industries rose 6% in February as compared last year. According to data released by the Centre, the production of Fertilizers, Coal, Electricity, Cement, Steel, Refinery Products and Natural Gas increased in February 2023 over the corresponding month of last year.

The only industry that saw a fall in production was crude oil.

United Kingdom joins Asia-Pacific trade treaty

The U.K., on March 31, 2023, acceded to the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP).

The agreement will now need to be ratified by Westminster and each of the CPTPP countries.

The deal would add GBP 1.8 billion ($2.2 billion) annually to the U.K. economy in the long run.

This, however, translates to a modest boost of 0.08% to GDP .

Railways completes 100% electrification of rail network in Haryana

Indian Railways has achieved a significant milestone, by completing 100% electrification of Railway network in Haryana State.

The existing Broad Gauge network of Haryana, 1,701 Route kilometre, is now 100% electrified.

Haryana state’s territory falls in Northern, North Central & North Western Railway’s jurisdiction.

Finland to be 31st member of NATO after Turkey’s approval

Finland will become the 31st member of Nato after Turkey’s parliament voted to approve its application.

Finland will now be formally admitted into Nato at its next summit in July.

Fellow neighbour, Sweden, which applied to join Nato at the same time last May, is still being blocked by Turkey over similar concerns.

Any Nato expansion needs the support of all its members.

NGT slaps Rs 10 crore on Kerala for its failure to protect Ramsar sites

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) imposed a penalty of Rs 10 crore on the Kerala government for failing to protect the Vembanad and Ashtamudi lakes, which are included in the Ramsar list of wetlands.

The Principal bench in New Delhi, chaired by Adarsh Kumar Goel, noted that the penalty levied per the ‘polluter pays principle’ should be deposited in a ring-fenced account.

ISRO's EOS-06 satellite captures images in 13 wavelengths

ISRO has shared stunning new images of the planet clicked using Ocean Colour Monitor in 13 distinct wavelengths on Earth Observation Satellite (EOS-06) also known as Oceansat-3.

The pictures were created by combining 2,939 images and processing 300 GB of data to create a mosaic with a spatial resolution of 1 km.

Oceansat-3 is a type of nanosatellite that was deployed by ISRO in November 2022.

Praveer Sinha reappointed Tata Power CEO & MD for 4 more years

Tata Power said it has re-appointed Praveer Sinha as the company's Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Managing Director. His present tenure as a CEO and MD is scheduled to conclude on April 30, 2023.
