World Migratory Bird Day: 8 May

World Migratory Bird Day is an awareness-raising campaign highlighting the need for the conservation of migratory birds and their habitats. It aims to draw attention to the threats faced by migratory birds, their ecological importance, and the need for international cooperation to conserve them.

The Day is celebrated bi-annually on the second Saturday in May and in October.

New species of shrew discovered in Andamans’ Narcondam Island

Crocidura narcondamica, an insectivorous mammal, a white-toothed shrew, from Narcondam Island (volcanic and uninhabited island) of the Andaman and Nicobar group of islands.

Shrews are small and mouse-like mammals, and they live in sub-leaf stratum in the forests. Insects are the primary diet of these animals.

S&P slashes India's GDP growth forecast to 9.8% for this fiscal

S&P Global Ratings slashed India's GDP growth forecast for the current financial year to 9.8 percent saying the second COVID wave may derail the budding recovery in the economy and credit conditions.

The US-based rating agency in March had an 11 percent GDP growth forecast for India for the April 2021-March 2022 fiscal year.

Haryana govt launches Ayurvedic tele-medicine facility for Corona patients

Health Minister Anil Vij of Haryana said that any patient can consult the Ayurvedic Doctors on phone by dialling 1075.

The facility has been launched after verifying the response of Ayurvedic medicines used on Corona patients. A call centre has been set up to run it and teams of senior Ayurvedic Doctors have been appointed for consultation, who will provide service.

N Rangasamy sworn in as Puducherry Chief Minister for record fourth time

AINRC chief N Rangasamy was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Puducherry for the record fourth time.

The Puducherry assembly has a unique arrangement where 30 members are elected by the people and three are nominated by the Centre.

This year, he contested from two constituencies – Yanam and Thattanchavady. While he lost from Yanam but managed to win from Thattanchavady.

India begins exports of organic millets grown in Himalayas to Denmark

India has begun exporting millets sourced from farmers in Uttarakhand, which meet the organic certification standards of the European Union, to Denmark.

The Ministry of Commerce & Industry, APEDA, in collaboration with Uttarakhand Agriculture Produce Marketing Board and Just Organik, an exporter, has sourced & processed from farmers in Uttarakhand for exports.

These farmers produce mainly millets such as ragi, barnyard millet, amaranthus, etc.

Dr. R.M.Sundaram appointed as Director of ICAR-IIRR

Dr. Raman Meenakshi Sundaram has been appointed as Director of ICAR-Indian Institute of Rice Research (ICAR-IIRR), Hyderabad.

Dr.Sundaram’s research accomplishments include the development of one of the first biotechnology products in rice, Improved Samba Mahsuri, a high-yielding grain type, has a low glycaemic index & is highly resistant to bacterial blight.

RBI sets up advisory group to assist regulatory review authority

The Reserve Bank has been constituted an advisory group to assist the second Regulatory Review Authority (RRA 2.0).

Headed by SBI Managing Director S Janakiraman, the advisory group will assist the RRA by identifying regulations, guidelines,& returns that can be rationalised.

RBI has set up the RRA 2.0 initially for a period of one year from May 1, 2021.

World Red Cross Day is marked on May 8 every year

May 8 is observed as the World Red Cross Day on Henry Dunant’s, the founder of the International Committee of the Red Cross, birthday.

This day is to acknowledge the beliefs of the Red Crescent Movement and the International Red Cross.

The first Red Cross Day was celebrated on May 8, 1948.

IFRC was founded in 1919 in Paris in the aftermath of World War I.
