Ministry of Education launched YUVA- Prime Minister’s Scheme For Mentoring Young Authors. It is an Author Mentorship program to train young and budding authors below 30 years.

YUVA is a part of the India@75 Project to bring to the fore the perspectives of the young generation of writers on themes like Unsung Heroes, Freedom Fighters, Unknown, and Forgotten Places.

RBI Annual Report for 2020-21: ‘Fall in provisions, sharp forex gains led to higher RBI surplus’

RBI released its Annual Report 2020 – 21, a statutory report of its Central Board of Directors for the transition period of 9 months (July ’20 - Mar ’21). According to the report, the balance sheet of RBI increased by 6.99% and RBI’s gains from foreign exchange transactions rose by 69%. RBI’s income decreased by 10.96% and expenditure decreased by 63.10%.

RBI imposes Rs 10 crore penalty on HDFC Bank over irregularity in Auto loans

The Reserve Bank of India imposed a penalty of Rs 10 crore on HDFC Bank in relation to irregularities found in its auto loan portfolio. This is one of the largest penalties imposed by the regulator on a bank in recent times.

The irregularities were linked to the marketing and sale of third-party non-financial products to the bank’s customers.

Mount Nyiragongo erupts in the Democratic Republic of Congo

Mount Nyiragongo erupted in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Mount Nyiragongo is one of several volcanoes near the DRC's border with Rwanda and Uganda. Its last major eruption, in 2002, killed 250 people and displaced thousands.

Nyiragongo and nearby Nyamuragira are together responsible for 40 percent of Africa's historical volcanic eruptions.

US President releases his first annual budget; sets out $6tn spending plan

US President has released his first annual budget - a $6tn spending plan that includes steep tax increases for wealthier Americans. The bumper proposal would include huge new social programs and investment in the fight against climate change. But it needs approval from Congress.

Under the plan, debt would reach 117% of GDP by 2031, surpassing levels during World War Two.

Tamil Nadu govt announces ₹5 lakh fixed deposit for children who lost parents to Covid

Tamil Nadu Govt announced that ₹ 5 lakh would be deposited on the account of each orphaned child & would be given to the child with interest when the child attains 18 years of age.

Families who have been left with single parents due to Covid to be given an immediate benefit of ₹ 3 lakh. It also plans to pay ₹3000 per month to relatives who have custody of the orphaned.

Govt sanctions 19,000 solar streetlights for Jammu and Kashmir

Ministry of New and Renewable Energy sanctioned 19,000 solar streetlights (SSLs) to J&K. The SSL project has the central financial support of Rs 42.06 crore against the total project cost of Rs 47.84 crore. The remaining is provided by the UT.

The installation of these SSLs shall help in saving 8.4 units of energy annually resulting in a saving of Rs 61.32 lakhs annually.

J&K becomes first UT to provide relief to COVID victims’ families

Jammu and Kashmir has become the first UT to provide relief to COVID affected. SASCM/Saksham Scheme was launched to provide special pension and scholarships to COVID victims’ families.

Under this, the surviving spouse & one eldest surviving member of the affected families will receive a special monthly pension of ₹ 1000 through DBT.

CESL will install and maintain solar PV systems for 5 years under the Remote Village Electrification programme of the Government of Goa

NASA to send its first mobile robot to search for water on the moon in 2023

USA’s NASA is planning to send its first mobile robot to the moon in late 2023. The rover named Volatiles Investigating Polar Exploration Rover (VIPER) will search for ice and other resources on the lunar surface.

VIPER will also be using the first headlight on a lunar rover to aid in exploring the permanently shadowed regions of the moon.

ICMR Approves Saline Gargle RT-PCR Test Developed By NEERI For COVID-19 Detection

Scientists of NEERI have developed a 'Saline Gargle RT-PCR Method' for testing COVID-19 samples. The method is non-invasive and so simple that the patient can themselves collect the samples. They can also get the results within three hours. This method is also environmental-friendly. NEERI is located in Nagpur, Maharashtra.

Academician, former Anna University VC M Anandakrishnan passes away

Eminent educationist and former vice-chancellor of Anna University M. Ananthakrishnan passed away. He served as Vice-Chancellor of Anna University for two terms and was chairman of the Board of Governors of the IIT, Kanpur.

He received several awards, including Padma Shri in 2002 & the Order of Scientific Merit from the President of Brazil in 1996.
