International Yoga Day - June 21

International Yoga Day is an annual event that has its roots in an Indian context, but is commemorated every year on 21 June.

The idea of International Yoga Day was conceived by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who proposed the concept on September 27, 2014, during his speech at the UN General Assembly.

Arunachal’s Tadang Minu becomes first Indian woman to be appointed as AIBA’s coaches’ committee member

Dr. Tadang Minu based in Arunachal Pradesh has been appointed to the Coaches Committee of the International Boxing Association (AIBA), the parent body for boxing in the world.

She is the first woman in the country and the second Indian to be appointed as a member of AIBA.

She is also the president of the Arunachal Amateur Boxing Association (AABA).

India starts exporting GI-certified Jalgaon banana to Dubai

In a major boost to India's exports of Geographical Indications (GI) certified agricultural produce, a consignment of fibre and mineral-rich ‘Jalgaon Banana’ has been shipped to Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

The twenty-two metric tonnes of GI-certified Jalgaon banana were sourced from progressive farmers of Tandalwadi village(Jalgaon district).

Srabani Nanda, with a personal best 11.36 s is fastest Indian woman this year

Srabani Nanda, currently the most active Indian athlete in the world, has emerged as the fastest Indian woman this year. The 30-year-old from Odisha clocked a personal best 11.36s at the NACAC New Life Invitational Meet in Florida, the US. With her 11.36s, Nanda replaces S. Dhanalakshmi, who clocked 11.38s in the Federation Cup in Patiala in March 2021.

Senior psychiatrist Pratima Murthy appointed as director of NIMHANS for five years

Dr Pratima Murthy, head of Department of Psychiatry, National Institute of Mental Health & Neuro Sciences (NIMHANS), Bengaluru has been appointed as Director of the Institute for a period of five years. She will retire in March 2026.

Dr Murthy was awarded the WHO Regional Director's Special Recognition Award on 'World No Tobacco Day 2021'.

In the Economic and Social Council by-election, Greece, New Zealand and Denmark were elected for a term of office from January to December 2022 and Israel was elected for a term of office beginning January 1, 2022 and until December 31, 2023.

Japan to start issuing vaccine passports in July

Japan plans to issue so-called vaccine passports from around mid-to-late July as more activities around the world open up to people who have been vaccinated against the coronavirus.The government is asking other countries to exempt travelers carrying the documents that officially certify their vaccination status from quarantine or to shorten the quarantine period.

RBI allows Centrum to take over PMC, re-launch it as a small finance bank in joint venture with BharatPe

Financial services player Centrum Group said it has received in-principle approval from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to take over the troubled cooperative lender PMC Bank and re-launch it as a small finance bank.

Centrum hopes to complete the license terms and conditions within the next 120 days.

Telangana government launches Revv Up for AI startups to solve tough business problems

As part of the Year of AI 2020 initiative, the Telangana government launched the Telangana Artificial Intelligence Mission (TAIM) accelerator programme Revv Up, which is exclusively designed for growth-stage artificial intelligence (AI) startups.

The vision of T-AIM is to develop Telangana as a global hub for AI startups. Revv Up, which will begin its first cohort in July.
