The government has appointed Thomas M Devasia - a senior executive from the private sector - as member (non-life) in the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI). Thomas M Devasia is currently technical expert at Marsh Insurance Brokers India working in Kochi, Kerala.

IndusInd Bank has approved the re-appointment of Sumant Kathpalia as managing director and chief executive officer for three years with effect from March 24, 2023.

Pranav Anand becomes India’s 76th Chess Grandmaster

Bengaluru teenager Pranav Anand became India’s 76th Grandmaster after he crossed the 2,500 Elo mark in the ongoing World Youth Chess Championship in Mamaia, Romania.

To become a GM, a player has to secure three GM norms and cross the live rating of 2,500 Elo points.

Dibyendu Barua was the second Indian, after Viswanathan Anand to achieve the title of chess grandmaster.

Iran signs formal MoU to join SCO; to become permanent member at 2023 India Summit

Iran has signed a memorandum of commitments to join the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), giving boost to India’s focus on an inclusive connectivity agenda in the Eurasian region that would function parallel to China’s Belt and Road Initiative.

The value of Iran’s exports to India increased by 35% in the first seven months of 2022, compared with a year earlier.

Varanasi declared as first-ever SCO Tourism and Cultural Capital for 2022-2023 at Samarkand Summit

Varanasi has been nominated as the first-ever SCO Tourism and Cultural Capital for the year 2022-2023 at the 22nd Meeting of Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit at Uzbekistan's Samarkand.

Notably, the regulations for the nomination of the SCO Tourism and Cultural Capital were adopted at the Dushanbe SCO Summit in 2021.

Govt slashes windfall profit tax

The government has slashed windfall gains tax, lowering the duties and cess on domestic crude and export of aviation turbine fuel and diesel following a decline in international crude oil price. It has cut the tax on domestically produced crude oil to Rs 10,500 a tonne from Rs 13,300 earlier.
