• Under the RTI Act, 2005, a Public Information Officer (PIO) must dispose of an RTI application within 30 days of receiving it.
• If the request pertains to life or liberty, the information must be provided within 48 hours.
• In cases involving a third party, the disposal time extends to 40 days.
• If the RTI request is transferred to another authority, an additional 5 days is granted, making the total disposal time 35 days.
• Failure to respond within the stipulated time can result in penalties, including a fine of ₹250 per day of delay, up to a maximum of ₹25,000, imposed on the PIO by the Central Information Commission (CIC) or State Information Commission (SIC).
