In the Union Budget 2023-24, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman stated that India is the largest producer and second-largest exporter of 'Shree Anna' (millets) in the world. India cultivates various types of millets, including jowar, ragi, bajra, kuttu, ramdana, kangni, kutki, kodo, cheena, and sama. These grains offer numerous health benefits and have been integral to Indian cuisine for centuries. To further promote millets, the Indian Institute of Millets Research in Hyderabad will be supported as a Centre of Excellence for sharing best practices, research, and technologies internationally.
