Question :

Directions : In a building having four floors (bottommost being marked as 1st and topmost floor being marked as 4th), there are two flats on each floor and both the flats on each floor are adjacent to each other, such that one flat is to the west of other. Flats on one floor are immediately above/below the flats of another floor. There are nine persons - K, M, N, O, P, R, S, T and U, and, each one lives in different flat except for two persons among them who live in the same flat.

R lives on the floor immediately below the one on which M lives. There is one floor between the one on which R and S live. T's and N's flat are on the same floor, which is not the top floor. The floor on which three persons live is the third floor. K's flat is towards the east of M's flat. P and R do not live on same floor and, P lives on a floor below T's floor. R doesn't share the flat with any other person. N lives on the flat immediately above S's flat. R's flat is not immediately above T's flat.

On which floor does R lives?

1. 1st

2. 2nd

3. 3rd

4. 4th

5. Either 1st or 3rd

Correct Answer : 3
Solution :

· R lives on the floor immediately below the one on which M lives.

· There is one floor between the one on which R and S live.

Also,

· K's flat is towards the east of M's flat.

we get, (here, S's and R's flat is not fixed)

Case I:

Flat 1Flat 2
4MK
3R
2
1S//S

Case II:

Flat 1Flat 2
4S//S
3MK
2R
1

Case III:

Flat 1Flat 2
4
3S//S
2MK
1R

Now,

· T's and N's flat are on the same floor, which is not the top floor.

Thus,

Case III becomes invalid.

Case I:

Flat 1Flat 2
4MK
3R
2T/NN/T
1S//S

Case II:

Flat 1Flat 2
4S//S
3MK
2R
1T/NN/T

Now,

· P and R do not live on same floor and, P lives on a floor below T's floor.

Thus, case II is eliminated.

We get,

Flat 1Flat 2
4MK
3R
2T/NN/T
1S/PP/S

Here,

· N lives on the flat immediately above S's flat.

And,

· R's flat is not immediately above T's flat.

So, we get,

Case I(a):

Flat 1Flat 2
4MK
3R
2NT
1SP

Case I(b):

Flat 1Flat 2
4MK
3R
2TN
1PS

Now,

· The floor on which three persons live is the third floor.

· R doesn't share the flat with any other person.

so, we get,

Case I(a):

Flat 1Flat 2
4MK
3RU, O
2NT
1SP

Case I(b):

Flat 1Flat 2
4MK
3U, OR
2TN
1PS

Since,

· U's flat is not immediately below M's flat.

So, case I(b) is eliminated and we get the final arrangement as follows:

Flat 1Flat 2
4MK
3RU, O
2NT
1SP

R lives on the 3rd floor.
