Question :

Directions : In the following passage, some of the words have been left out and replaced by blanks represented with letters. First, read the passage and try to understand what it is about. Then fill in the blanks as per the questions given.

The first signs of spring might well be weeks, if not months, away, so for those impatient for warmer days ahead, there is one summer crop you can get sowing right now: chillies. Despite having grown up in southeast Asia, where we can eat chillies three times a day, it wasn't until I moved to the UK that I really became _____________(A) by the enormous array of weird and wonderful varieties out there, especially from small, indie growers. With literally hundreds of ____________(B), in an almost infinite variety of flavour, use and spice-level, I believe there must be a chilli for everyone - even people who think they don't ____________(C) chillies! So, here's my rundown of niche varieties you will never be able to buy in stores. For beginners, my top choice would be 'Apache', ___________(D) offers up generous crops of bright red, bullet-shaped fruits with a fiery kick. In my experience, they are the most tolerant of a range of environmental _____________(E), making them the ______________(F) to grow, even outdoors in lacklustre summers.

Select the most appropriate option for blank A.

1. Fascinated

2. Indulge

3. Disenchanted

4. Bored

5. Repelled

Correct Answer : 1
Solution :

The given blank cannot take a verb as it is already mention in the sentence i.e. 'became'. So, this eliminates 'indulge' which is a verb. The sentence with the blank talks about the fact that the author was not interested in chillies earlier and later on he/she became interested in it which is suggested by the phrase 'it wasn't until'. So, this eliminates 'disenchanted' (which means 'disappointed by someone or something previously respected or admired'), 'bored' and 'repelled' (which means distasteful to). Hence, the answer is option a) 'fascinated' which means 'strongly attracted and interested'.
